Breastfeeding

wine

just want to know when it would be ok to have a glass of wine. I love wine and haven't had a drop since I found out I was pregnant. Now that I'm breastfeeding I want to make sure my milk is safe for him and that I'm not doing anything to compromise my supply. I've been getting conflicting answers to when/ if its safe at all

Re: wine

  • I'd start with half a glass with dinner. When your baby changes from cluster feeding all evening to sleeping a predictable chunk, have a glass after that feed before the longer sleep.

"Safe to drive, safe to breastfeed" is the general rule, but I'd err on the side of caution with a baby so young.

  • My inlaws came down and stayed the whole first week I had my son.  By the end of the week I was desperate for something.  I had a glass of wine while I was breastfeeding, figuring it would take time for the alcohol to metabolize into my breastmilk so he wouldn't be getting any during that feeding, and by the time his next feeding rolled around, the alcohol would have metabolized out.

For the first few months I had to stick with a glass of wine at a time, because my tolerance was so shot.  More than that and I didn't feel safe enough to drive or breastfeed.   I typically would drink right after a feed/with a meal so that it would metabolize out.

  • Yes you can have a glass of wine.  I would do a small one to start with, drink it as close to when LO eats even during a feeding would be okay.  But, I would stay away from cluster feeding time like pp said.

    Enjoy it!

  • I'll have wine or a beer right after ds eats. If he wakes up before 2 hours I'll give him a bottle and pump once 2 hours hits.

  • I'll drink when my LO goes to bed. Then I'll pump and dump so I'm not sore in the morning since he sleeps through the night. If he happens to wake up in the middle of the night, I will use the alcohol test strips you can buy at babies r us.  They have come in very handy so I can make sure I can breastfeed him safely.

You don't need to pump and dump unless you always pump? The alcohol test strips are really unnecessary unless you are really partying - totally not necessary for a glass of wine.

  • Thank you!!! tomorrow I will be going to buy a bottle. I've missed my weekend wine!!!

  • You can actually buy alcohol test strips for breast milk. That may ease your mind?

  • A drink here and there is ok.  I ususally try to time it right after a feeding.  It will not hurt your supply, there is no need to feel guilty at all!  Enjoy.

  • I can't see your LOs age but PP mentioned cluster feeding. In breastfeeding class they said you should wait about 4 weeks PP to have alcohol and 5 ozs of wine takes 2 hours to leave your system. I had a glass of red the first time at 3.8ish weeks, almost 4, DD had successfully taken a bottle from DH and went back to breast with no issue more than once. We started that at 3 weeks and there was a bottle pumped and ready incase I didn't feel comftoable after. Which I didn't because I'm super parings about boozey milk.
