Recommendationfor Northwestern Memorial Delivery

Hello,

I would like feedback on your delivery experience at Northwestern Memorial. After to speaking to many friends so many have had C sections and over 23 hours of labor just to end out with a C Section. I'm also interested in Dr. recommendations and how the nurses and whole experience was as well as visitor rules.  Thank you for your time!

Thanks!

Re: Recommendationfor Northwestern Memorial Delivery

  • 20 hours of labor, emergency c/s right here. Overall they were good for my care,  had good nurses, but they love interventions. Pitocin and early membrane ruptures are their BFF. The NICU here is amazing, my DD was there for 15 days and I felt very comfortable with the care she received. Like PP said, depends on your provider. Even though I had a very hard labor experience my provider was amazing. Dr Brian Foley - highly recommend.

  • I also ended up with an emergency c-section after 18 hrs of labor then followed by 4 hrs of pushing (thanks to a generous OB who was really trying her best to not do a c-section with me), just 10 minutes shy of 24 hrs of active labor we got to meet our LO.

One thing my OB office advised is to labor at home as much as you can possibly stand, especially if you are wanting to go intervention free because the temptation to take that epidural will be that much greater when you know it's just a phone call away for the nurses. It also allows more time for interventions to occur so that is what we did even though I knew I would want an epidural. And I concur with the other posters, your OB/midwife is who calls the shots, so if they are okay and/or heavy with interventions you will be on the receiving end of that.

As far as the Prentice staff goes, I thought they were great. Even though it's a teaching hospital, I only saw (or maybe just noticed) one or two students during my time there and they only did the initial u/s to check baby's position. But perhaps that is just because it was the weekend? Visitors were restricted to 4, with a waiting room on each floor for "overflow" However, on the PostPartum floor they often look the other way if you have more than that as long as you & your party are being respectful and staying out of their way when they are working. The only thing I remember them being sticklers about are no kids in the room unless they are siblings.

Prentice also offers tours weekly for you to visit the Triage, Labor & Delivery, & Post Partum floors with a "tour guide". I found it to be helpful and you get the opportunity to ask questions, etc.

  • Thank you so much for your posts! I really appreciate you taking the time to write in. I'm sure there are many out there who are reading this and appreciate more people and there expieriences and challenges and tips help us all!  Glad to see you all have healthy babies!
    Thanks!
  • I had a good experience there, but I also wanted an unmedicated L&D, so I labored at home as long as possible. When I got to the hospital, I was 10 cm and pretty much pushed immediately. All went fine. The nurses were nice and helpful except for one biatch. I delivered on Good Friday, though, so I was there until Easter Sunday and it seemed to be a bit of a skeleton crew. I had a hard time getting an LC to visit.
  • I had a great experience there. Like pps, I labored at home for as long as possible. I did want an epidural but I didn't want it right away. My contractions were irregular, so I got it about an hour or two after arriving, when I knew I could still sit still for it.

The staff was fantastic. I did have a student present for my delivery but that didn't bother me. She held a leg, DH held a leg and my OBGYN did the rest.

I was comfortable during my recovery, the food was better than expected and the view from my room was excellent.

  • I had a great experience at Prentice.  I spent 23 days before delivery on the Antepartum floor after my water started leaking.  The nurses took amazing care of me and my babies.  I delivered my twins vaginally. The L&D staff was awesome.  I had the best nurse and I don't know how I would have delivered both babies vaginally without her.  I really think the decision to move to c-section has a lot to do with your Dr, not the actual hospital itself.

As far as OBs go, I go to Northwestern Specialists for Women. I've seen all of the OBs there and every single one is great.  Dr. Cox is my primary.  I saw Dr. Salasche for 5 years before her.  Dr. Dugan delivered my twins.  I highly recommend the practice.  Every OB there is very knowledgeable.  They were all comfortable delivering twins vaginally, also, which is kind of rare.
