milk cups

What do you all use for milk cups?  Would you recommend your cup?  Preferably a straw cup.  (DD never took to a bottle and she's always had better luck with straw cup than sippy cup.  Though I've got a couple sippy cups that I use for water sometimes to try to get her used to the tilting.)

I am so sick of having milk all over my kitchen!  My current cups leak like crazy.  (I didn't mind so much when it was just water, but milk is a different story...)  We have a Playtex straw cup and a Nuby straw cup.  I like them because the straw tucks away in the lid for travel and DD seems to like them, but as I said, they have a tendency to leak.

Re: milk cups

  • I never found a straw cup that didn't leak, and for that reason we don't use them.

DD2 uses the Tommee Tippee Explora cups with the spout and they are the most leak proof of the million sippies we've tried.

  • I have only tried ONE type of cup that works and it was a stage 3 cup by Nuk.  It has a white plastic insert that goes into the lid.  If I use any other cup I only put water in it because everything else leaks just as you mentioned.  Good luck!
  • We use the Nuby straw cups.  They're cheap, so I got 2 for home, 2 for my ILs house, and 2 for my mom's house.  They don't leak, but if the girls decide they're done and just flick the straw out of their mouths it does splash some milk.  But we still really like them.

ETA - I just saw that you use the Nuby cups - there are little notches in the top part, do you make sure they're lined up?  I didn't know about that at first and then read a review on them and saw it and that fixed the leaking issue.

  • All straw cups leak.  It's the nature of the beast.  If you put an ice cube in with the milk, it'll help reduce the amount of milk that'll come up the straw on its own.  When liquid warms in the cup, the pressure rises and forces liquid up the straw.  So, if you keep the liquid colder, you'll have less liquid that comes up.

We use the Playtex straw cups.  I've tried quite a few other ones (including the TT Explora ones another poster mentioned), but DS doesn't like the whole bite down AND suck motion.  So, we've stuck with the Playtex cups and the disposables ones.  If you do use the disposable ones, make sure you do NOT put the straw in until AFTER you secure the lid.  Otherwise, you get a milk geyser.

Your kid just hasn't tipped it right.  Mine figured it out a few weeks ago.  It did take him about 6 months of use to figure out how to make it leak, though.

We have a couple of these and I actually really like them.  They're great for travel and they hold the milk temp for quite a while.  BUT, they're really heavy.  They do take some getting used to for LOs and they can do some damage when thrown.

  • The Playtex straw cups are THE WORST. I literally threw out my Playtex insulator straw cup because it drove me so nuts. But I've heard great things about their sippy cups. I agree Wth the above that the Tommee Tippee ones are okay for not leaking, but it's way hard for my kid to get anything out of them. And I find them harder to clean because of the shape of the straw.

In a post like this about leaks a couple months ago, someone recommended the Vital Baby straw cup, and it is certainly my favorite and best at containing leaks. Here's a link to it on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00440CZTQ/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1360009187sr=81pi=SL75

  • We use the Playtex sippy cups. DD loves the straw type but I gave up because of all the leaking like you describe.

I assume that anything leaks if you flip it upside down. But if the cap is on, and he flips it, no, we haven't had any leaking issues...or maybe he hasn't tried that yet. Overall, we haven't had a problem with it.

  • The Nuby are the worst for us.  They used to be fine, but now if I stick it in my bag I get a wet back if I bend to pick something up.

So far the Playtex have worked best for us.  They only leak if they "bubble up"  so now when the straw is tucked under.

  • We use these:

They only leak if LO turns it upside down and shakes it and then it's only a few drops.  I love them!!!

Hmmmm....I wonder if I have a different model of the Nubys b/c I just looked and don't see any notches.  I bought mine at a store, but this looks like the same.

Ummmm....those totally leak, especially when your toddler tosses it aside in the car and it lands upside down. Then it ALL comes out all over your carseat. Lovely. One of mine also broke - the little part that keeps it closed broke when DS dropped it. But yeah, if they don't toss it upside down, they are fine. Oh...they also leak on airplanes because of the pressure Wink But all straw cups do that.

OP, my favorite cups are the Playtex Coolster spoutless cups. They kind of look like coffee mugs. I like them much better than anything with a hard spout, and there is only one kind of soft-spout that I prefer.
