insurance coverage - breast pumps

Not sure if this has been posted, but I didn't run across it. For you FTM's especially, don't forget to check with your insurance provider to determine if they cover breast pumps.  my insurance covers a few of the brands, so definitely will save us the $$$ on that!

Re: insurance coverage - breast pumps

  • Mine covers them 100% but needs a "diagnosis" and a prescription from my doctor after the baby's born. I discussed this with my OB at my last appointment and she said she is very accustomed to doing this and will write up something like "painful latch" or something that's probably going to be true anyway.

I know it's sort of a controversial issue on this board regarding "scamming" insurance companies and it's a bit of a grey area considering I'm planning to get one regardless of how hard or easy breastfeeding is, but I pay high enough insurance premiums that I don't feel guilty about making sure this is covered (which I believe it should be covered for all women, anyway, but that's a political conversation for another day! :)

  • Interesting....my situation is different no scam involved. My insurance covers 100% for OTC breast pumps, no prescription/diagnosis required..  I would recommend moms who are weary about this talk to your provider. If I recall, don't quote me, but under the health care act your insurance comps should provide this now...

  • I called my insurance provider a few weeks ago after hearing that they should cover them. Turns out my insurance will only cover a hospital grade pump and only while I, or baby, are in the hospital. I felt pretty ripped off considering how much I pay for insurance and how much they don't cover. I'm already at almost $1000 in medical expenses this pregnancy and I'm not high risk. The least they could do is cover a breast pump, no? lol

  • I called mine today and it's covered. I have to go to a durable medical supply place or rent one from the hospital.
    3 ectopic pregnancies (EDD's 1/30/12-tube removed, 6/2/12-methotrexate and 10/2/12-methotrexate)
IVF and Natural FET resulted in BFN's and a hole in our wallets
Natural BFP #4 on 9/7/12 gave us our miracle on 5/18/13

  • I have to get a Rx from my provider and use one of their medical equipment provider companies.  I also am not eligible to request one until the baby is actually here.  I have no idea how long it will take between requesting it and receiving.

Aww, I'm sorry. I wish they covered it for you. There are less expensive electric pumps than the Medela or ameda brands, I would look into those.

Some of the medical suppliers have the pumps on hand. Maybe call around before hand and have a couple approved companies that you already know have them in stock.

  • Mine is covered at 100% with no deductable. The funny thing is they said I have to wait until the baby is born but then can go buy one anywhere (as in Target, anywhere) and send in the claim and an rx from my doctor and they will reimburse it. So I guess I get to pick which one I want.

  • My insurance covers a hospital breast pump rental for 6 months. I'm glad the question of "requesting it and receiving it" was brought up! Another question to tack on to my growing list!
  • According to the law that Obama passed, all insurances have to cover SOME kind of pump. Unfortunately, bc our insurance runs on a JulyJune fiscal year, my coverage doesn't kick in until July 1st. I spoke with my insurance company today, and they said I should still be able to get it at that point, but I'll have to call back closer to july
