Audiologist Appointment Today - Not sure if I should be worried

DD did not do well at the visual reinforcement audionmetry test. She failed to be conditioned to look at the ghetto-ed out lit clown that the audiologist was using. It was a light with a face drawn on and a clown wigged taped to it. I was scared to look at it - totally sinister looking.  She stayed focused on the dirty (like phyiscally looked like it could use a good purrell) book the assistant was showing to her. She looked when there was noise but failed to look when it just lit up. DD is a NICU grad and we live in a condo on a very noisy street, with a barking dog, and a noise feeding tube pump. This kid blocks out things and will focus on what she wants.

So now the audiologist has me concerned and I asked her to send the results to our opthomologist, neurologist, and pedi in addition to the ENT. Her new tubes had a clog so we have to get that taken care of first.  Am I just trying to rationalize this? I know we probably have bigger problems but we are still in wait and see mode. Any thoughts?

Re: Audiologist Appointment Today - Not sure if I should be worried

  • You are probably right. There was just something about the woman testing her that bothered me. I am going to see about going to someone else.

  • I took DS2 to an audiologist when he was 18m or so to R/O hearing loss as part of his speech evaluation.  He considered the isolation room a peronsal house of horrors and clung to me and screamed.  Forget the monkey with the cymbals or the freak-show clowns in the corner.  All he wanted to do was bury his face in my chest.

I sent him back a week later with my mother.  He was/is far less dramatic with people who are not me and they were able to complete the test then.

My point is, you *might* consider sending your LO with someone who you trust who is not you.  Your LO might be more open to the testing procedure.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Lauren's first audiologist appointment was very similar! I requested another appointment and asked to see an ENT as well. We got the same result but I felt much more comfortable the second time.

  • Thanks! We are going to see another audiologist in a few weeks or so. We did follow up with the ENT and there was no ear clog.
