baby carriers

What carrier do you recommend? DS is very active so I think I will need to wear this baby so I have my hands free. I have a baby Bjorn, but DS was small so I could not use it with him for a few months. What is good for a newborn that can be used from the start?

Re: baby carriers

  • I used the Ergo a lot in the 1st year of 2u2. It has an infant insert and I used it from the beginning with my DS. I use this carrier still with both my kids in the back carry.

Whichever you use, I highly recommend you don't use a "crotch-dangler" carrier like the Bjorn. A carrier like the Ergo is better for their hips.

  • Thank you for the tip. I barely used the bjorn with DS because I did not like how he hung in it. I will check out the ergo.

  • My favorite carrier for young babies is my Moby wrap. Newborns like to be snug and held close, and with some practice you can breastfeed in it on the go as well. I know a lot of people prefer the Maya because it lasts longer.

  • I used a baby ktan for the first 34 months. It's like the moby but easier to put on. Then I switched to the ergo which I loved!

  • I liked both the Baby K'tan and the Baby Hawk when they were tiny. Both are very easy to use and the babies feel secure in them.

  • We have 3 - a bjorn, ergo, and maya wrap.  With DD1 I tried a moby, but I felt that was not 2u2 friendly - it took so LONG to get it on, DS would be running all around.  DD1 was also born in the summer, so the ergo with infant insert was too warm.  She spent a lot of time in the bjorn (I know - crotch dangler, but she is fine now, and it was easiest for me at the time).

With DD2, I use the ergo with infant insert the most - a lot in the house with the other kids, when we go for walks, etc.  I keep the bjorn with the winter cover on it in the car and use that when we go to the store, etc since it is the fastest for me to get on and off, and I don't want to invest in yet another carrier for my last child!  I use the maya wrap when I need to nurse the baby while giving the big kids dinner, getting them ready for bed, etc.

    Good luck!

  • I recommend the Je Port Mon Bebe. It's a stretchy wrap like the Moby but you can use it longer because of the special type of material AND you can use it on your back safely (unlike the moby). You can put it on at home, drive to your destination and then pop baby in when you get there.

It's not very well known over in the US but it's a great wrap, I know people who've used it with toddlers too!

Otherwise I'd get something like the babyhawk. I used this with DD from a week old and loved it.

  • I love my Beco Gemini, it's for 8-35 lbs, but I'm sure you could do a smaller baby in it just fine (my babies were always 8+ at birth). It's easy to get on and off, bf in, and really comfy. I highly recommend it!
