Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Shots ( also on Dec board)

Today my LO turns two months old, time is flying by so fast, and we have our well baby appt for Thursday which includes his first round of vaccines. So I was wondering from any stm or anyones whose already gone through this if there is anything I need to do to make it more comfortable for him, as well as how your guys babies acted after receiving them.

On a side note I feel terrible for having to do this to him and the guilt is killing me. The sensible side of me knows that its best for his health, but the emotional side of me is like your letting someone hurt your baby, and I cry just thinking about it. I know I'm most likely going to bawl as soon as he starts to cry thank god DH is going too.

This. Tylenol before shots is definitely key! The first few rounds of shots aren't too bad, and usually just make baby sleep more... But as they get older, Tylenol!!! If baby takes a paci, make sure you bring one along for after too. It's definitely harder on us than them... GL!

  • theres a new study out in the area of Pediatrics that suggests there may be some correlation between Tylenol and developing asthma so at least my pedi is beginning to advise against giving Tylenol with 2 and 4 month shots unless absolutely needed. Also theres a study that suggests there could be decreased response to the shots if Tylenol is given in the first 24 hours after the shots. Just a thought.... my LO did fine with her first shot and wasn't even all that fussy afterwards.

  • If you bf then that can be a great comfort. That is what I did with DS1 and plan to do with DS2.

  • It's hard but IMO very necessary!

My LO had his 2 month shots and is going in for 4 month this week (he was preemie 2.5 month adjusted). After his 1st set I sat in the waiting room and nursed him til he fell asleep then loaded him up in he car to drive home.

Once home, I nursed him again and tried to rub out the knot in his leg. This was under the advice of the nurse at the Dr.'s This sent him into FURY as of course it hurt. Some say its better though because it loosens the muscles.

Instead, we wound up giving Tylenol, laying in swing and putting a hot pad over his legs to help loosen the knots/relax his leg muscles. He slept and I think it really helped!

    Good luck!

  • Only give Tylenol AFTER if baby is miserable.  Have whatever comfort item ready.  You will need to learn to buck up too.  It will make it harder on the lids later.
  • Yep, only give Tylenol afterwards if your pedi suggests it.You LO may not even need it and be perfectly fine from the shots. I would encourage you to not give it before the shots for the reason I just listed, but I believe in using Tylenol when LO actually needs it instead of using it as a precaution to a reaction your LO may not even have.....but thats me. I want to say awhile back someone posted a link about using Tylenol can decrease the shots effectiveness.

After the initial cry our lo was fine just a little more fussy. By the next morning he was perfectly fine!

  • My doctor told us to give her tylenol after the shots and if you're nursing be ready to do so to calm the baby.

"Giving babies Tylenol to prevent fever when they get childhood vaccinations may backfire and make the shots a little less effective, surprising new research suggests."

  • It is not that bad I promise! I stressed about it more than anything. In fact my daughter was pretty chill about 48 hrs after getting shots. She is normally pretty fussy to say the least. I wish I could take her for shots every few days haha!

Our doctor who is also our friend said to absolutely not give him Tylenol before shots.

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

  • Honestly the idea of the shots was worse than the actual. Far easisr than when they took LOs blood for jaundice testing. Had LO's Great Aunt join us which made it easier on me because she held LO during. Told LO beforehans that she'd be getting shots, would hurt but would be better after. Nursed LO right afterwards.

like PPs said, Dr said wait on the Tylenol unless necessary because of immunine response research that is stastically significant.

  • On my third baby here and I think shots are basically no big deal. I've always nursed immediately after and then poof, all better. It has only ever been the initial pain of the needle that caused crying an once baby is calmed down hence the nursing, everything is all good again.
