not sure what to do about work.. long

So a little background. DH and I have two wonderful babies (they will always be babies to me no matter their age) and are expecting twins. I started working overnights at a motel mainly so we didnt have to pay over $1000 per month in daycare and I could stay at home with them. IMO I have the best of both worlds.

I started working in November and knew that with this job I would have to do some laundry, mainly folding and putting it away. Lots of twisting and bending and its hard on my back at times. Fast forward to two weeks ago, we found out we were pregnant and the following week that it was twins (this past Tuesday). I am already high risk and obviously with twins puts me at a different level.

My concern with working is that all this twisting and bending (although fine for now) will start to be an issue as my belly grows. I do like what I do as far as the office work goes, laundry is meh... something I have to do. I dont know if I should start looking for another night audit job that doesnt require me to do laundry now or if I should wait until it starts to affect me? I am concerned that if I wait and I am showing and look for another job I wont be hired. My manager did say that once it got busy that theyd hire a laundry person full time so maybe I'd be off the hook but thats not usually until spring when all the road construction starts. I'll be 20 weeks at the start of May. Advice? Anyone been in a similar situation?

  • Have you told the boss you're pregnant yet?

  • Yep, work knows.
  • I would say take it a week....or day...at a time and listen to your body. If it starts getting to be too much maybe you can talk to your boss then and ask for fewer physical duties. You could also talk to your doctor and get a note if necessary. It's good that you want to be careful; you should be fine as long as you pay attention to your body's cues and don't overdo it, esp as you get further along. GL!

  • There's a lot of different things that go into this decision.  For example, if you quit your current job and started a new one you would likely not be eligible for FMLA at the new job because you won't have worked there long enough.  Is your current job going to hold your job for you while you're out?  I would be very concerned about moving to a new job because if you end up going out on bed rest early (which is probably 50/50 with twins, but you said you were high risk to begin with) what are the odds that they'll hold your job for your bed rest plus maternity leave?

For what it's worth, I was put out on bed rest between 26-27 weeks.  At 20 weeks I felt perfectly fine and had no problems doing laundry.  I'm assuming that you do way more laundry then I did, but you also said it's mostly folding and putting away - could you put the laundry on a table or something so that it's more at your level and you'll have less bending?  You might have a weight restriction for how much you can lift, but you could do a few more trips.  My OB said that light exercise was actually very good for me and the babies (until I was put on bed rest, of course).

  • I think you need to tell your manager your concerns. I felt pregnancy got real tough around 28 weeks and was put on rest soon after. Your babies come first! Btw I admire you work all night then take care of infants! Omg! When do you sleep?
  • It's a tough situation, but I wouldn't look for another job. IMO, it's dishonest to get a job without disclosing your pregnancy  to them, but that's just my belief. Your boss should be understanding I would hope. Can you fold sitting down? Like on a counter? If you didn't have to stand, it really shouldn't be too bad.

  • I am not eligible for FMLA with the current job I have since I will be 2 months shy of the 1 year mark of working there..if all goes as planed and the babies stay put. Plus, they are considered a small business which they dont offer insurance, paid time off unless youve been there 2+ years and its based on your average number of hours worked.

There really isnt a way I can fold sheets while sitting down. They want them done a certain way, which I am not complaining about at all, but when I have to twist/bend down in the cart to get the next item for folding it just gets to be repetitive and a bit painful on my back.

Chasing around a 3 year old, an almost 2 year old and keeping up with the house is my workout. I work Friday night- Monday night and luckily my dh is usually home on the weekends allowing me to get about 4 hours of uninturrpted sleep but thats about it.

I talked to my manager about all of this the other day and she keeps saying "you know what you were hired for..." and I'm thinking "well i told you in my interview that my husband and I are trying to have a baby so when it happens it happens." I am afraid that if I say it, and I know how I am and what my tone usually is, it will come out in the wrong way.

I am going to try and calm down and be rational for a week or so but this job isnt worth stressing myself out or potentially losing my babies over. I dont get paid enough to push myself to or close to that point.
