Any MoMs deal with this?

So my boys are 28 months old, and we nursed until they were 15 months old.  Around the time we stopped bf'ing I notice my hair was really wiry and my scalp was itchy.  Then for the last year I have gone through some serious mood swings, stressors, extreme fatigue, weight gain, depression, lack of sex drive, dry skin, and the crazy hair issues.... A month ago I googled the hair thing and it came up with hypothyroidism. I looked at the symptoms and was floored with how many I had!  I haven't scheduled an appt yet with my PCP because well, what if all of this is in my head and my levels are fine? Ugh. What if it's I'm just STILL overwhelmed with the task of mothering 2? Sigh.
God gave me a double portion for my inheritance with my little Mighty men :) 9/19/10 Baby A born at 1:47 am 6lbs 14oz, 20.5inches long. Baby B born at 3:20 am 6lbs 6oz, 19.5inches long. My double blessing!:)

  • It's always a good idea to get a check-up anyway.  You have to take care of yourself too.  And beside hypothyroidisn is really easy to treat if that's what it is.  So, do yourself and your family a favor and call tomorrow for an appointment!  And then go and actually do the bloodwork.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • In addition to getting a "thyroid panel" done, be sure they also test your free t3 and free t4 levels too. It's not included in the thyroid panel but is necessary in determining your levels.

This... have them check your TSH level (should be between 1 and 3 optimally, but some doctors say 0.5 to 5.0... don't settle for a level outside of 1.0 to 3.0).

Also, like PP mentioned it is important for them to see regular as well as free t4 levels because TSH doesn't mean a whole lot without them.  I would encourage you to see an endocrinologist if your levels are off since most PCPs will just prescribe Synthroid for hypothyroidism but will refer out for hyperthyroidism.  I was hypo but turns out I have autoimmune thyroid disease, Hashimoto's Disease, and would've never gotten the diagnosis if I stayed with only my PCP during its onset.

  • thanks.  Does this mean that you ladies have dealt with this issue? If you did/do, what were your symptoms like? How soon after medication/treatment did you start to feel "normal" (as if that is possible! lol).

I go back and forth between thinking I just need to 'get a grip' and realize I am running myself ragged trying to keep my home the way it was pre-twins.  And be better about choosing the things I can do adn letting the rest be a non-issue.  It doesnt' help that it's winter time :/.

I would love to schedule the appt tomorrow, but my husbands medical insurance is terrible, and changed carriers at the new year (though I diddn't realize it until looking into this) and now I have to find a new pcp :/

  • As I was reading your symptoms list "hypothyroid" immediately popped into my head.

Definitely have them test your TSH, T4 and T3 (free) and I'm sure you'll have an answer. Your list of symptoms is like text book hypoT. Take care of yourself, the fix could be as easy as a once a day pill. Not to freak you out but thyroid cancer can have similar symptoms. Get tested and you'll feel much better with knowing what's happening inside your body.
