February 2012 Moms

C-section Mamas (semi-graphic AF ?)

Pre-pregnancy, AF used to be fairly light and short, ultra-thin pads and about 4 days.  AF returned 6 weeks post-partum. The first 6 months I got two periods a month- one like my normal and one midway between with 1-2 days mostly spotting. Then AF skipped a month and a half and came back with a vengeance ever since.

The first two and a half days of AF (usually 7 days now), it is like I am going to bleed out. I have to wear a pad that if there were straps on the sides would be a diaper and sometimes a tampon in addition. Sometimes blood soaks through my pad and clothes within 2hrs. When I use the restroom, blood gets all over the toilet and sometimes drips down to the floor. The cramps are really bad those first 2.5 days too. I pretty much have to take Advil. And if I need to use the bathroom or have gas, holy shiz, it feels like I am 3 days post-partum again. The next 4 days of AF are like a normal medium- heavy period.

I had my annual the first week of August and the doc said to give it a year to get back to normal, but that was before the heaviness and cramps started and it will be a year Wednesday.

Is this happening to anyone else?

ETA: I am not using any birth control (and don't want to) and I was EPing and still pump 2x a day.

  • I haven't had a period yet, so no. But that doesn't sound right!

  • I hope nothing is wrong and the crazy heavy stops soon (I have AF now). DH gets worried seeing me keeled over in pain. He keeps asking if it is normal and I don't know. I asked my SIL a couple months ago (she is a Dr. but not an OB) and she said it could be my new normal (boo!) and that as long as the crazy heavy doesn't last more than 3 days, I'm ok.
  • I haven't gotten mine back yet (I had a c/s and we are still BF). But this sounds similar to how my periods always were. I take 2 ibuprofen (or midol) for the cramps with a heating pad - and I'm usually bed ridden for a few days. The last period I ever had (apart from the postpartum stuff) - I bled through a heavy duty tampon and through the pad after 2 hrs while at work. AF went out with a bang. I agree with your friend. As long as it slows down after a few days, its ok. It sucks - but its ok. Hopefully you get back to your old normal - I know how you feel and it is the worst! Hang in there.

  • If you are worried, you should call your OB. My OB told me at my annual that if I bleed through a tampon or a pad in an hour, I should call. My pp AF sounds similar to yours, except I was on the mini pill. I was getting AF every two weeks. I just switched back to my old pill bc I'm done bf, and so far, still had it at the two week point.

  • I had a c section and my 2 PPP have been completely normal.

ETA and I was on the mini pill while I was nursing, but I haven't used any BC since middle of October.

  • I had a cs, but I'm not sure that type of delivery really affects AF, but I guess it could. My pp is way heavier than before! I've tried 2 different bc and neither helped that necessarily, and I'm not on anything now. It's like the flood gates open immediately, where it used to be light for a day. And it's heavy for 3 or 4 days, where I used to have a semi heavy day or 2. Then it's light for another 2 or 3 days, where it used to be 1 light day then done. So, I'm having a period for at least 7 days now and it used to be 5 days from start to finish. Much, much heavier than before. I thought it would just take a few months for things to get back to normal, well that thought quickly faded...I got it back at 8wks. Again, I did try 2 different bcs so I don't know if that affected anything in the middle of it all...it did seem to ease up a little but this last time. And I am more crampy, where I used to not have cramps at all! If it's that heavy and you're in that much pain, I too suggest calling your dr!
