Since mid-December, DS went from sleeping GREAT at night (like 10-11 hours straight) to waking up 4+ times crying. I shouldn't even say waking up--often he'll be crying super super hard, but we go in and his eyes are closed. It's like he's crying in his sleep, but if we don't go to him and shush him or rub his belly or give him his pacifier, he'll fully wake himself up. At first we thought it was because he was learning to roll (he'd roll on to his stomach and be stuck, then start crying) and as a matter of fact last weekend when he DID master rolling both ways he started sleeping through the night again for a week straight! We thought we'd turned a corner. Last night though it was back to being up all the time.
He will first wake up anywhere from 1 to 4 hours after going down...and once he's hit that initial wake up/cry, he's up/crying LITERALLY every 30-60 minutes. It's just enough time for me and DH to start to drift back to sleep, then he's crying again. Hoping last night was just a fluke, but given that he did this for a month and a half STRAIGHT, I don't have the highest of hopes.
Does anyone else's LO do something similar? We did start solid foods around the same time these issues began, but why would he have been able to STTN for a whole week when we didn't change anything? We are at our wits end with the lack of sleep!
ETA: I lost track of the number, but we HAD to have been up at least 7-8 times with DS last night. It's ridiculous!
Re: Crying every 30-60 minutes at night
We're going through this as well.... I talked to the NP. at her 6month app and they checked for an ear infection but she did not have one. She thought maybe she was just hungry so I recently added a few bites of cereal before her 7pm bottle. Its only been a few nights of this and she seems a bit better for the first half of the night but the early mornings still rough.
My thoughts were either her teeth (we have not cut any but can see the whites of the 2 bottoms) or gas pains. I considered picking up all natual gas drops and adding it to her bedtime bottle to see if that helps because I also thought her waking began about a week after pureed solids.
This is what I eventually ended up doing. She STTN now, for the most part. However, I have a feeling she'll never sleep all night in her crib again. She does still take 2 to 3 hour naps during the day in her crib so I'm happy with that. It just got to the point where I NEEDED sleep.
UMichGirl - I feel your pain. I think your LO is about the same age as mine because I swear you post something similar to what we are going through every time! I have info from a pedi that essentially says that you can't go wrong with Motrin (as PP suggested). According to him - you really can't harm LO with reasonable doses. If LO is fussy for no apparent reason maybe something is hurting even if you can't see it. DD is having a similar problem and I've given her a dose this evening at the Pedi's recommendation. So far she has slept an hour and a half... keeping my fingers crossed.
