No swaddle=no sleep....help!

Hi all--LO transitioned to crib about 3 weeks ago. He slept on his side (with pedi's blessing) propped up with a rolled receiving blanket to prevent him from rolling over.  I was swaddling him one arm out for last 3 weeks to help him with crib transition. He was giving us a good 6 hour stretch if not sleeping through some nights. BC he is almost rolling my DH is really nervous about swaddle.  And the reviving blanket doesn't seem to be holding him on his side anymore--- he's almost rolling over it.

Tonight we put him in crib without a swaddle. I tried him on his side and flat on his back. He moves so much. Arms, legs never still. He's been up every 30 min-1 hour.in addition he is squirming all over the crib.  I'm exhausted. (and of course--DH is sound asleep next to me)

Any ideas on how to make this work? I go back to work on Wed and cannot have nights like this.

Re: No swaddle=no sleep....help!

  • Honestly, I'd keep swaddling and use a sleep positioner or something like that at night so he stays put. Babies don't lose the startle reflex for awhile...he'll probably keep waking himself up if his arms are just free to flail.

  • Perhaps some rolled up hand towels put between the mattress and crib sheet, they should be a little thicker and roll up taller than a receiving blanket. It might hold him in place better.

BTW you are too nice! No way would I let DH sleep through all of that.

  • This is my fear. DS is still sleeping in our room but not for more than another month or so and I'm already up to swaddle about 2 times every night. I was reading that eventually he won't require that swaddle and snuggle feeling. Well, when's that? !

  • We just transitioned CJ from a swaddle to a sleep sack. Still kind cozy, but arms are free. Maybe you could try that? It as helped him transition into his crib.

I really like this idea!  We are about to transition DS into his crib from our room, and I'm hoping this would help him :)

But persephonerose, I agree with the suggestions from PP and hope things settle down soon for you.  GL!

We have done this. A is such a little mover and this helps keep her in place.

  • We've been using rolled towels since he was about 2 weeks old. They keep him nice and snug and super cozy and also keep him in place. Woot!
  • We use the Halo Sleep Sack w/ the swaddle and LO loves it.  Really helps him sleep and he can move his legs.

  • Have you looked into purchasing a Baby Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit? They're a transition outfit from swaddling to sleeping with arms out. Think: A Christmas Story... "I can't put my arms down!" Totally awesome!
