Multiples

A question...

What are the different kinds of multiples. I had only ever known Identical and Fraternal. I have seen di/di ,Momo and another I can't remember mentioned on the board. How do I know which I have?  They are in separate sacs from separate eggs and a result of clomid/IUI.  TIA!

Re: A question...

  • Do they have separate placentas too?  Sounds like you have di/di twins.  Check out the link, I think it will help.  Congrats!

  • Twins can share amniotic sacs and/or placentas. Twins who share neither are di/di. Twins who share both are mono/mono. I think mono/di shares a sac, but not placenta (someone will correct if I'm wrong).

There are different risks associated with each type. Di/di is the lowest risk.

I didn't notice how far along you were, but your MFM can tell you for sure. Even with multiple eggs from Clomid/IUI, it's possible one split to give you a mono/mono or mono/di situation (mono is more frequently identical, tho not always).

ETA: Yep, I got it backwards...see below.

  • Mono/Di share a placenta but not the amniotic sac. Mo/Mo are the only twins who share amniotic sacs, and it puts them at the greatest risk due to entanglement. Nearly all twins who share a placenta will be identical - there are extremely rare circumstances where twins can share a placenta and be completely fraternal, but it involves a *very* early fusion of the blastocysts. Placentas can also fuse later in pregnancy, but that's still di/di with fusion - not mo/di or mo/mo.

  • di/di are normally referred to as 'fraternal' meaning non identical.

If an egg splits very early tho they can develop into their own sacs and placentas appearing to be fraternal. About 25-30% of di/di twins end up being identical. There is no way to know until after birth unless they are boy/girl.... in that case they cannot be identical.

If you are told youre twins are di/di and they look very similar after birth and are the same blood type, you should have a dna test done.  It will be the only way to know for certain if they are identical or not.

For example, mine are di/di  and both girls... so the hospital will find out their blood type at birth and if they are the same... I will eventually get a dna test done just so we know. There are some benefits to knowing, so id really want to know.

    good luck!!
