IUD?

I'm seriously considering using a Mirena IUD after our LO arrives. Has anyone used one?  Did you like/dislike and why?

Re: IUD?

  • I got my IUD 6 weeks after DD was born. I loved it the whole time. Just had it removed Nov. 21. The only thing I would recommend is to make sure they don't trim the strings too short. I had to go in 3 times and get one ultrasound to find the strings to get it out. Once it was out it was back to normal cycles for me.

  • I got the Mirena IUD put in 6 weeks after DS1, and absolutely loved it!  I still had some spotting for a few weeks after it went in (never really stopped spotting from DS), but then I never got a true period until I had it removed.  A few months I had some light spotting for a few days, but that was it.  I didn't have any weight gain, cramps, etc.  and none of the migraines I had while on BCPs.  The very best thing, though, was not worrying about remembering something every day- there's no way I would have been consistent with another birth control method.

I had it removed at the end of August and waited until December to start TTC (due to other issues), but started getting regular periods every 25 days after it was removed, and we conceived LO#2 on our first cycle of trying.

I know some people have bad experiences, and if you really don't like it, you can always get it pulled and try something else, but I loved mine.  I'm getting another one after LO#2 arrives!

  • I have a Mirena.  I've had it about three months now and the spotting has mostly subsided.  My period has become very light as well and I have no pregnancy ticker in my siggy!

  • I had Mirena placed about 8 wks after DD2 was born.  It was great at first.  I enjoyed not having to take a pill and my period got lighter every month.  Around 9 months I gained 11 lbs in one month, my belly bloated, I had the worst acne breakout and I became extremely irritable and short tempered.  I started researching side effects of Mirena and it was all of those things.  I ended up getting the Mirena replaced with ParaGard, because I really like the concept of an IUD.  I am actually really enjoying not using hormonal birth control.  I feel better, I sleep better and my sex drive is way better.  The only adverse effect I've had with ParaGard is that period was pretty heavy for 2 months, but this last month it was much lighter.  From what I've read, this is common and your body should balance itself after a few month.

  • People really seem to love the Mirena.

Check and see if your insurance covers it because many of my friends had to pay for it out of pocket. It's around $1,000 I think.

I got mine about 12 weeks PP. I have pros and cons.

    Pros:

    Not thinking about bc.
No migraines (due to hormones in BCP I got them quite often before)
Regular periods (mine never stopped, I still ovulate and have periods every 28-29 days) which doesn't bother me.

    Cons:

I have some nasty side effects. Having raging EWCM is one side effect that I have that isn't very common, apparently. I have had it checked NONSTOP and it's "the most beautiful, healthy, ripe CM!" according to the OB and MW I saw. Eew. I get this about 2 weeks out of the month. I have to wear pantyliners daily.

I also got a nasty case of cervicitis from it. bacteria shouldn't be able to travel up the strings, but it was a painful, painful infection. I was in bed for about 2 days and the antibiotics took about 5 days before they really kicked in.

String checks- I do check them and sometimes you have to dig around for them because they curl up and whatnot, which can cause some panic initially. DH is pretty good about informing me that he felt them the last time we had sex :)

GL in whatever you choose to do. Overall, I like the Mirena way more than the BCP but I am not sure I will get one again (which I think just leaves condoms, charting (which I don't trust), or a snipper-roo for DH as our options).

  • I had a Mirena placed 6wks after DD1 was born.  At first it was great and I never got a period while I had it, even after we stopped BFing.  But I developed horrible insomnia.  Baby would be sleeping 10-12hrs/night and I'd get 10-12hrs/WEEK.  Made me a horrible, moody person.  Within 3 days of removal I was sleeping normally again.

I loved the concept but Mirena was just not for me.  I'm willing to try a Paraguard after this LO arrives.

Oh yes, I also have a VERY stubborn 5 pounds that I cannot kick no matter what. I don't know that it's the IUD but who knows.
