Anyone else considered high risk?

First, we had our first u/s today and everything was perfect.  Baby measured right on track at 7w3d which matches calculations from LMP.  Hearing the heartbeat was amazing, both H and I cried.

Now for the fun part.  I have stage 3 kidney disease and HBP, which puts me at a high risk for pre-e.  I'll be seeing a high risk Dr. for my 12 week scan.  Sucky thing is we live in a small town so it's about a 2 hour drive.  Good thing is that it's the same place I have to go for my kidney specialist  so hopefully we can coordinate schedules so the appointments are on the same day.  It sounds like there will be many Drs appointments in my future.

Anyway, just curious if anyone else out there is considered high risk?

Hoping this one stays put a little longer

Re: Anyone else considered high risk?

  • I actually have to speak to the NP at my appointment tomorrow about this. DS was 7 weeks premature so I am at increased risk for pPROM and PTL again, about 30%. I already know from talking to my OB that I will have my cervical length monitored but I am not sure what else to expect and whether my regular OB will continue to see me or I will referred to a high risk doc. I want to discuss all the options available to me so I can do my research to do what I can to prevent having another preemie.

  • I'm high risk, although it is the baby that is effected, not me. I have Antibody sensitization, which mean my antibodies start attacking my LOs blood as soon as the placenta starts working, it means I will have to go down to the specialists from 12 weeks on, and probably need intrauterine transfusions, I don't know how often I'll have to go, last time it was once a week from 20 weeks and twice a week from 30 weeks, it's an hour away, and I am usually there for hours, with DS here now, I will have to work out some kind of care for him, it will be hard, but I know it's worth it.

Diagnosed with Anti little c antibodies. DS1 7.11.11 - Anaemia and Jaundice. 10 days in the NICU, 1 exchange transfusion and 4 blood transfusions. DS2 29.8.13 - Anaemia 7 days in the NICU and 1 exchange transfusion. Both are now happy and healthy.

  • I am.  My Drs consider patients that did IVF w/ ICSI higher risk from the get go, mainly because there is a slight risk of heart defects with it, so I'll have a fetal echo around 22-23 weeks.  I've also got a history of uterine abnormalities (septum removed) and a history of pre-term labor.

    2 years, 2 surgeries, 2 clomid fails, 2 IUIs, 1 loss, IVF #1 - 10/25/10 = BFP!, DS is now 3.5yrs!
    TTC #2 - 6/12 surgery #3, FET #1 & 1.2 = BFN, 12/2012 FET #2 = BFP! DD is 1.5 yrs!
    Surprise! 12/16/14 BFP, loss #2 12/31/14

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • I'm high risk because I have a seizure history as well as brain surgery.  In addition I have a history of having a short cervix. I will see the high risk specialist at 12 weeks and then again every two weeks after that.
  • I am high risk for a multitude of reasons but specifically because I am "advanced maternal age"...ick!!! I will be 41 when my babies are born. Oh well.
  • I don't know anything about kidney disease but my first reaction is wow. Do you have to do a lot to maintain your health before you were pregnant?

As for high risk, I was last pg. Although your restrictions are much more severe than a normal pg, you get lots of extra attention. Our u/s were always so informative instead of the normal "your OB will call you". I was only high-risk through 20 weeks, though. A friend of mine is high risk and has to do the multi-appts in one day and it does sound like a PITA for her. She has to take off work and drive into the city to the big hospital.

  • I just had my first appt yesterday, which was only with a nurse to go over everything.  I have high blood pressure (been on meds since elementary school), so now I have to see doctors only and have a consult with a high risk doctor.  I'm hoping at my next appt they break out the ultrasound machine!

The main thing I dislike about this is that my appts have to be during the day, and I'm sure more frequent, meaning I have to use vacation time that I need for maternity leave.  :(

Not really - I'm on BP meds and a low sodium diet & I was already seeing a nephrologist once a month.  I had asked him if I should be concerned about getting pregnant and he said no, we'll just be monitoring really closely.  Some of the damage is related to chemotherapy when I was 16.

Thanks for the answers ladies, it's interesting to hear other people's stories.

I'm glad your routine isn't too outrageous! And I hope you have an "easy" high-risk pg, even though that's an oxymoron.

  • The plan is to see the perinatal doctor on the 18th, right after 12 weeks, because I have ulcerative colitis. From the sounds of it, anyone with a chronic condition meets with the high risk doctor. I guess I'll learn if I'm truly "high risk" at that appointment.

Same here.. This is my first so I don't know exactly what to expect, but this is what my RE told me..

I'm high risk because I've always had high blood pressure. I'm on meds for it (labetalol). What meds are you on?

I'm on methyldopa - my nephrologist started me on that because he knew we were going to start TTC, that way I didn't have to switch meds.

  • Kinda...not sure yet.  I was considered high risk with my first pregnancy because I have Factor V Lieden which is a blood condition that makes you more predisposed to clotting.  I haven't had any previous issues and did fine during pregnancy and delivery last time so I'm not sure if they'll label me high risk again or not.  I guess I'll find out in a couple of weeks when I go to the dr!

I'm also on  methyldopa...had  it switched  before TTC.  I think it does ok, but not as good as my old stuff.  I was EXHAUSTED when I first switched...more than I am now, lol.

I've never been on anything else so I don't have anything to compare it to.  I wonder if I'll switch after the baby is born?

  • I'm high risk. I don't have any clotting disorders, but 2 1/2 wks after I had DS I had a stroke (almost every vein in my brain had a clot, including my jugular, as well as a couple hemorrhages). Since the blood work didn't show anything and the clots had been there for a month before they were discovered, they think it was due to my pg. So I get to be on Lovenox injections and induced at 39 wks. Good fun. Luckily I don't have to be monitored any extra, I just have to be very aware of my headaches. Eh, the outcome is worth it.

  • I am for my weight and the fact that its twins now. Which is funny since my weight has only ever affected my joints.

Then my doctor is also saying I am high risk for PPD after.

    Best of luck!

  • I am considered high risk because I had a tubal reversal done about 4 months ago, not to mention I am in the 35+ age category. So when I found out I was pregnant (4wks since LMP - at the time) I had to schedule an u/s to make sure everything was good and was intrauterine and not ectopic. So far so good; now I am just freaking about the genetics testing and hoping for the best!

This is my DH's first, and my 3rd.

  • I am.  I had a LEEP procedure done a few years back which puts me in the high risk category.  The nurse told me that I would basically get lots of extra attention...more ultrasounds, frequent visits, etc. I am 6 weeks and 3 days and feeling great!
  • I'm super high risk. My twins were 15 weeks early and I was on bed rest from 18 weeks until delivery, I will have ultrasounds every 2 weeks and a TAC at 12 weeks

  • I am high risk due to having autoimmune hepatitis. I was diagnosed in 2001 and have been in remission short after that with only one flare up when my father passed away in 2011 due to stress. I have been on imuran since 2001 and predisnose for the flare up. We were not actively TTC so I wasn't really prepared with finding out where I was stability wise before trying and we found out at 5 weeks. I will be seeing a high risk ob on the 12th but everything seems to be going well and doctor has me off my meds. Thanks to dr and research I'm not super worried because in most cases with autoimmune diseases they get better during pregnancy and then I just have to do check ups after to get back on track.
