Baby Names

Do you and your siblings' names match?

I can't play because I have no siblings but my SO has always felt that his name did not match with his siblings. He is Henry James Edgar. His siblings are Chad, Lauren, and Julie. I left their middle names out for privacy but just know they are very simple, common, and modern* names. Growing up he hated having that name. He felt like it was an old man name and very dreadful(his words).

Personally, I love the name and it seems a lot of other people do too since the Henry Trend is picking up. He still gives his parents a hard time about Edgar though lol. He hates it.

*modern= not isabella, sophia, olivia, or anything like that but modern for 70s-90s as in  Jessica, Amy, Steven, Kyle, etc.

Re: Do you and your siblings' names match?

  • His sibling names might be more modern and common for the time period, but I wouldn't think them totally out of place with Henry.

My mom gave the first 3 of us all the same initials, first and middle. That could get hairy when calling after kids, more so than usual I think. I have a friend whose name is close to her sister's but their 2 brothers' names are not close, and she agrees. As for our actual names, mine is fairly unique (not you-neek), my brother is very typical 80s and my sister, who is younger, has a very 60s/70s name which took her a long time to like. My youngest brother is named after my step dad and his nameis nothing like the rest of ours. It wasn't ever a problem.

I want my children's names to sound normal together but not part of a theme. DS is Theodore nn Teddy and DD will be Anastasia, probably nn Annie. We didn't intentionally go Greek this time and Margaret was in the lead for a very long time. But I wouldn't do Teddy and then McKinsleigh, if you get what I mean.

  • No, my name had risen in the charts the year I was born. My sisters is about as obscure as you get (not you-neek but really obscure). My brothers name is an accepted variation of a more traditional name.

They sound okay together but they are certainly not the same style.

  • I feel like Henry is becoming more popular now so a kid being named Henry today might not feel it is "dreadful" like he did. It is kind of the "odd" one of the bunch of his siblings, but in general they all go together.

I feel like my sibling names do not really go together:

Laura, Katy, Abram, Charles (but goes by "Cash", not even as a nn, but just as his fn), and Andrea.

Abram is definitely the odd one out! And they definitely don't go together as much when you put in their middle names because, for example, two of the girl girl middle names are traditional "filler" middle names: Joy and Anne.  And the other sister's middle name is non-traditional: Kai.

  • Yes, similar in sound and they're both classic names (I think), but mine is more "popular" than hers.

    I'm Sarah; she's Laura.

ETA: Both our names were common "filler" middle names in the late 70s/early 80s, but they were also family names- Jane and Marie.

  • No, thank God!

The only similarities between me and my sisters are a double initial for first name and middle name, but none of our initials are the same. I'm eternally grateful to my parents for not saddling all of us with a sibset.

My oldest sister has a feminine variation of my dad's name (Lauri), my middle sister has a name that a waitress had and my parents loved it (Kacey), my name was the most popular name at the time (Ashlee) and they changed it to Lee because the doctor who delivered me had that for his middle name. Fun side note: the same doctor delivered/will deliver all of my children :)

For what it's worth, I don't consider your husband's family having matching names. They have a similar trend, but not matching.

  • No. Well, we all have the same mn, but our fns do not match.

I'm the oldest. I have a trendy version of a family name, which I do not like.

Brother 1 has a classic, popular name after our grandfather.

Brother 2 has a less common, but still legit name that is starting to get more popular in the era of old man names. It's not a family name.

Brother 3 has a family surname that is extremely unusual as a first name.

Little Sister has a fairly unusual version of a family name.

So we're all over the map. I'm sort of bummed to be the one with the trendy name.
  • Both of us have names that end in the "-ee" sound, so they kind of sound like they go together that way.  But my sister's name is more classic (still in the top 100), and mine is a more unique spelling of a somewhat classic name that got really popular in the 80s.

  • My name is very 70s/80s. My sister's name is very uncommon, and my brother has a classic name.

DH is Phillip and his brother is Benjamin. I also think they go well together.

  • I feel like our names are a little all over the place. I like my name the most out of the bunch (Alexandria). My brother goes by his middle name, which is Sutter. His first name is super trendy as a girls name now. My sister's name is Stormy. I also have two step brothers, Jonathan and Dalton.

OP I actually like your husband's name the best out of his sibset. I think they all go together well. Too much matching, in my opinion, gets a little overdone.

  • Our names are definitely very matchy. Samantha, Tabitha, Larissa, Vanessa, and Nathanial. Our middle names are all family names that are very "old" sounding, but not common enough for me to consider classic.

  • My sister's name is Sharlie Marie 12 1/2 years older than me brother is Christopher David 10 years older than me and mine is MaryElizabeth all one name no middle name and I am only in my early 20s I hate it so I just go by Beth our kids' names are Lyndsay Marie and Sophie Marie by accident we are a blended family lol but hey it pays tribute to my sister who passed away last may and our son is going to be born this may and be named Gabriel Collins
  • I am the youngest of four, the oldest two were born in the mid 70's and their names go well together, Glen and Heather. Then in the 80's my parents had my other sister and I, and our names go very well together, I am Lauryn and my sister is Ashleigh. But saying all our names together you can tell who is oldest and who is youngest. Glen, Heather, Ashleigh and Lauryn
  • Not at all. One stripper name and one floral name.
  • My sister and I both have traditional names that I feel work well as a sibset. She is Elizabeth and I'm Sara.

  • Brian, Amy, Jessica, Jeremy, and Jonathan. I'd say they go together pretty well. My parents both have J names too, but they didn't really plan all the J's as a gimmick. All of our names are just ones they liked, except Jonathan, which is in honor of lots of Johns in the family.

They're all common, easy names. Nothing too trendy, although Jessica was a big one in the 80s when I was born.

  • We're Rebecca, Adam & Jeremy, so all biblical names.  I don't think they're overly matchy, but they sound normal to me. :)

I can see why your DH feels like Henry is out of place, but it's definitely my fav of the names in his family! :)

  • My brothers and I don't have matchy names but similar ones. Our names were all out of the top 100 when we were born. They all sounded good next to each other on Christmas cards lol

  • Yes, my parents had a very trendy 70's sibset, Heather & Michelle.

While I love Henry, it definitely seems a bit out of place with that sibset for that time. Especially with Chad, lol!

  • I think the matchy-ness of our names was unintentional, but my bro and I have the same first initial.  Also, my name was #1 the year I was born, and his was #7 the year he was born.  So... very trendy I guess.
  • I don't think so. I'm Erin, she's Jaime.

My husband, yes. He's John, she's Elizabeth.

  • My little brother and I go hand in hand (Laura and Luke). Both pretty classic names I think. My big brother was named after our dad (Charles nn Chase) so his name is a little different style. But Chase, Laura, and Luke seem to go together to me.

My husband and his sister don't seem to go together to me. She is Melissa and he is T.J. (Thomas).

  • I'm Melody and my sisters are Angelina, Rosa, and Sylvia. I definitely feel the odd one out. I am also the only one born in the 80s; they are all 90s babies. Middle names are all over the map. Angelina and I have mn that honor our mother (who is Korean) and Rosa and Sylvia have mn that honor dad's side but are definitely not common. We have a really common last name. Interesting note: none of us like our full names.

  • I have 3 siblings and our names definitely match.  My oldest brother is a Jr. but his name still fits with the rest of ours.  The other 3 of our names start with the same letter as our mother.  And everyone's name has 5 letters and 2 syllables (my dad and 2 brothers) or 7 letters and 3 syllables (my mother, sister, and myself).  And all our names sound like they're from the same decade.

  • Not at all. My name is 80's. One brother has a very classic, old English name. The other brother (born 14 years after me), has a very trendy Western name.

  • Mostly. Jay and Jane. Pretty matchy! But then my mom got pregnant with her second husband, and they named her after his mother, so her name is Emma, which totally didn't go with the theme.
  • I am Nicole, my sister is Kimberly and my brother is Matthew.  I think we go well together.
