I'm a third-time mom, and I registered on Amazon (to get the discount at the 30-day mark, and so my parents and in-laws could see it, because they were both asking what we needed). It's not a bad place to register, but as far as showers and things, I think there are easier places - there's no easy direct link to get to the Amazon registry.
For a first time mom - I would suggest Target or Babies R Us and a local baby store, if you have one. We have a little boutique here that is strictly for baby supplies and it's very popular for first timers.

I'm planning on doing BRU, Amazon, and maybe one more place. I can't decide if I want to use Target. We registered there for our wedding this last June, and almost everything we received has already fallen apart.
With DD I registered at BRU. With DS I didn't have any showers, but I registered at Target to get the 10% off completion code to get a few things we needed.

We have an Amazon universal registry for everything. I really like it, but then again, there's not much at BRU that we want, so it's the only thing that makes much sense.
I'm registered at BRU, Walmart, and Target. I'm syncing all of my registries to myregistry.com so it shows up on one list for my personal checkoff and to make it easier on my sister with the baby shower invites
then what do the non Internet users do to find out where you're registered?

I can't speak for her, but no one in my immediate family or friend circle is a non-internet user, certainly not anyone I would invite to a shower. My grandparents all are completely able to use the internet to look up a registry. I had an all-internet registry for my wedding and everyone managed to find it. I know this isn't the case for everyone's family, but if they don't use the internet, they can just go buy whatever they want like many people do.
We would love to do just one on Amazon, but I know some people would rather not shop online (even though they are able), and some people tend to pick up shower gifts at the last minute (myself included), so that doesn't really work so well with online shopping.
So for in-store options, Target is most conveniently located for all family/friends, but most of the things we would have registered for at Target were only available online, so we might as well just put those things on Amazon; that left BRU & BBB, and after going in to both stores, it was BBB, hands down. At BRU, it was hard to find things, customer service wasn't terrible but wasn't great, it seems kind of dirty, etc. BBB had a huge selection of everything (including the cloth diapers we wanted, which weren't available in-store anywhere else), it was clean, organization of the store made sense, and the customer service was absolutely wonderful. It's a few minutes further for some of our friends & family, but not too bad, and completely worth it.

This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts! DS born at 34 weeks with (surprise!) gastroschisis turned short bowel syndrome. 131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
Buy buy baby and pottery barn kids. We only registered at PBK for bedding and furniture. Everything else is at BBB. I'm having 2 showers so I hope that I put on enough items in different price ranges for each. I also love how BBB takes coupons!
I went into the Babies R Us store started my registry there. It was convenient so that I could pull on slats of the crib to check durability, or to hold the carseat for comfortability, collapse the stroller, etc. I had planned on switching evetything to Target afterwards but they're prices were comparable so I decided to just finish up any last minute things I kept thinking of online. It's been very convenient!
Re: Where are you registered?
I'm doing mine on Monday, since we just found out we're having a GIRL
We're registering at Buy Buy Baby & Target!
