Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Similac Alimentrum

I also posted this in the 3-6 month board but wanted to get other opinions from more experienced moms, I'm a FTM.  I am wondering if anyone has tried the Similac Alimentrum with luck.  We started supplementing formula at night when my baby was about 3 weeks old and we used regular Similac since I got a free sample in the mail.  Well it seemed to give her gas & cause her to spit up so we switched her to Similac Sensitive.  At about 14 weeks we had to stop bfing b/c she refused it so now we're strictly formula fed. Well at 18 weeks (she's 20 weeks now) we decided to switch her to regular similac b/c I didn't like how the sensitve had corn syrup as the first ingredient & her dr. agreed.  Well since being on it she's developed a small rash on her butt (yeast infection like) & spits up more.  She's always been fussy, not colicky but close to it sometimes. Her bowl movements have also changed so after reading my Dr. Sears book I realized we needed to switch formula again.  I did not want to go back to sensitive b/c she still spit up a lot from it so I was looking at the Alimentrum.  Has anyone tried this & had luck even though your child wasn't colicky but it fixed other issues like fussiness & spitting up?  Your help is appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Similac Alimentrum

  • I used it when my daughter had a milk protein sensitivity and colic. It worked great, but unfortunately it was way too expensive for our budget. I switched to Gerber Soothe and that worked just as well. :)

  • My son has been on Alimentum for about 3 months and it has worked very well with his colic. Now as far as spitting up goes I think that no formula can help that lol. He spits up often even with Alimentum but I think its reflux. All I found to help with it is to make sure to burp him really well... Hope this helps :)

  • We had to switch from sensitive to alimentum bc of a milk protein intolerance and in a few weeks we had a totally different baby! His fussiness and colic were so minimal and it was easier for him to go to the bathroom. We got a letter of necessity from the GI specialist for the insurance company and they cover 70 of it!

  • We used Alimentum with DD because she had colic and it really helped. Like a PP mentioned, our pedi wrote a prescription for it so our insurance covered it. It's really expensive and I would only use it if you've tried everything else first or if your insurance will cover it. Gerber good start gentle is a great alternative to Similac sensitive. The main ingredient is whey based milk protein. My son needed a sensitive formula as well and I had the same concern you did about the corn syrup.

  • We used Alimentum for a little while for painful gas issues. It help a lot. After a few months, I didn't notice any gas at all, so I decided to try to switch. I did some research and found that Similac Sensitive is formulated differently than Enfamil Gentlease. Similac Sensitive didn't work for us, so we moved on to the Gentlease after the Alimentum, and it was a great transition, no gas issues. I also didn't like the con syrup idea, so I transitioned to Enfamil Infant. It seemed to make him uncomfortably gassy, but not painful. So we just switched back to Gentlease. So my suggestion is to try Gentlease or maybe Gerber before trying Alimentum. I had no first hand experience with Gerber, but I've heard good things. And if you do use Alimentum, be prepared to really scrub your bottles and nipples. That stuff is greasy! And smelly! Good luck!
