I live in New Orleans, and I learned this today from someone in town here to educate ER docs about how to spot a trafficking victim. In 2010 10,000 traffic victims were brought into Miami for the Super Bowl, so I imagine that's a common number? Ew. It makes total sense, but it makes me hate the Super Bowl.
I can't find any GOOD sources. I did see an interesting comment war online about how this is only a myth, and how other Super Bowl cities didn't make increased arrests for prostitution during their Super Bowls, but that DEFINITELY does not mean increased prostitution and trafficking wasn't happening. If it was easy to catch it wouldn't be such a huge problem, you know?
Any event that is likely to drive or increase prostitution is an event that will also drive sex trafficking. Also, any city or region that harbors large numbers of any [alien] population is likely to have elevated numbers of trafficking victims. Unfortunately my cousin was a victim of sex trafficking, kidnapped off the street on her way home from highschool at age 16. We worked very closely with FBI and federal prosecutors to bring her home and get justice, finally winning a landmark sentence of 30 years. This issue is so close to my heart, I just hope you all never ever have to learn about it first-hand!
