Starting daycare

I know that there were probably a million posts about this when our LOs were still newborns, but I am asking again: What questions should I ask the director when scoping out a daycare facility? My FMLA runs out in April, and we are looking to place DS in daycare 1-2 days a week for about 6 hours a day. This is the first time we are looking into daycare (and it's actually making me pretty emotional!) so it's an entirely new world for us. The director already provided information on the daily activities and the provider to child ratio (1 provider for every 4 children). Aside from what their sick-child policy is, I'm at a loss even though I know there are a lot of questions that I should be asking. Help please!

Re: Starting daycare

  • I asked about the teacher's qualifications and how long she has been with the center.

Is she infant CPR trained? What do they do in emergency situations? Can they administer medication (C takes meds everyday at 3:00 so it was important to us)? How are we notified about problems/concerns?

  • Your daycare should have a plan that's available to you with their procedures. We asked about:

    • security: locked doors, video cameras, who is/is not allowed to pick up your child
    • supplies: do they provide food, should you leave bottles there, bring your own diapers, wipes, diaper cream, ect. (do you bring bottles home to wash or will they do this)
    • Weekends
    • Plans change: how much time in advance do they need to know if your hours/days change
and everything the PP said. :) Make sure you feel secure about leaving your child there. The first few days are tough. You will probably cry (both my husband and I did) and the care providers will completely understand.
