Two Under 2

Part-time vs. Full Time DC

So right now I work 3 days in my office, and two days from home.  DS1 currently goes to DC 2 days a week and is with MIL 1 day.  When DS2 arrives, he too will be on the same schedule when I go back to work.  Later this year, my in-laws will be moving to FL and I will have to put the two of them in DC 3 days a week to compensate that extra day.

The home DC I use is great, I really love her, DS1 is comfortable there, she has a beautiful set up and does a really great job, so I am comfortable with him there and would like to stay there if possible.  It is $60 a day for each child to go, she doesn't offer a weekly rate, or sibling discount(which I didn't know other DC's offered that) it is just a daily rate and that is it.  The only thing she does is reduce rate to $50 a day when they turn 2, which won't be until September for DS1.

I will be doing more research on my own of course to see what other DC's offer for 2 kids, but just wanted to see other ppl's experiences with this.  Do you find it would be more cost effective to put them in for the week rather than the few days?   I would certainly miss having that extra time at home with my LO's if I put them in for the week, but I guess I am just curious as to what options are out there that I may not have been aware of.  Still figuring everything out!!

Thank you for any input you can offer!

Re: Part-time vs. Full Time DC

  • Financially, I can't really tell you what would be best. But I worked 3 days a week when my second was born, and we already had my oldest in fulltime care. Part time is not an option anywhere I found in my area. When I went back to work the baby was 3 weeks old, and I would still send my oldest most days to daycare. It was great that I had that extra one on one time with my baby on my weekdays off, and my oldest really benefitted from keeping her routine. It was only a short term thing, 2 months, but having the full time care worked for us.

  • Do you work from home while watching your child those other 2 days?  If so I don't know how you get much work done outside of naptime.  The one thing I can say is that my 2 kids do NOT nap at the same time.  So if they were at home with me I would not get anything done at all.  So under that assumption, I would absolutely switch to FT DC.  Generally there's not a huge difference in cost from 3days to 5.

  • I was shocked when I spoke with our daycare about the cost difference btwn pt (3 days) and ft. It's about $50 per wk. no break for 4 days. After speaking w a few moms w kids spaced about the same as ours will be, 21 months, I decided to keep my son in daycare ft and see how things go throughout maternity leave.
