Potty Training

nap and night training

My son is 23 months and goes poop and pee in his potty. He hasn't had a accident in quite sometime.  I go out with him during the day and I hold him on a toilet and he goes... But my question is when and how do i try nap and night- time? Do i try nap first? Or both?  Should his diapers be dry during those times because the are not.  thanks

Re: nap and night training

  • Night time training is a physiologic thing, you can't really train them for that. For some kids it is early and some kids are day time trained for a long time before they are dry at night.

I would say that if he does not stay dry for most naps or most nights he is not ready yet (also, does he tell you when he needs to go potty or does he pee/poop on command). My DD PT'd at 26 months and at that time she had been dry for naps 99% of the time for several weeks. Nights she was dry for several days in a row and then she would be wet for 2 or 3 nights. I was going to keep her in diapers for a while at night (nap I stopped right away) even though she was dry most of the time. I just didn't want to deal with messes in the middle of the night and I wasn't too worried about having her in diapers for a while longer at night. 2 weeks after she day trained she didn't want the diapers anymore at night and has been diaper free since then. She has had 2 minor accidents at night (just a little wet) and one big one (and that was after she had not pooped for 2 full days) in the past 2.5 months. She rarely needs to go potty at night but she has been good about calling me when she does need to go.

I would've been fine keeping her in diapers at night though (and was fully expecting to do so since I was a bedwetter for a long time) and was pleasantly surprised when she ditched the diapers on her own.

give it time, it will happen on its own. To me it wouldn't be worth the messes and lack of/ interrupted sleep to try and get him out of diapers at night, especially since he is so young. But I suppose there will probably be people who would disagree with me.

  • I agree with the pp who said you can't night train. DD1 was day trained by 2.5 years and just started waking at night to go potty within the last month. It's almost exactly 4 years since the time she was day trained. I think her bladder finally caught up to her growth.

DD2 is day trained now at 27 months. She usually wakes up from naps dry, but she's still wet in the morning. We use a diaper or pull up for both.

  • It's funny becasue I was about to post on here about night time training.  I have been having DS wear diapers to bed; some days he wakes up dry, others he wakes up wet.  Well tonight he flat out refused to put the diaper on.  He insisted on wearing his big boy undies to bed.  I threw down some chucks under his sheet and am hoping for the best....

And this comes in not so good timing.... we had his birthday party today and my 33 week pregnant body is sooooo sore right now.  I can barely even move so I am hoping we have success tonight, but Im not really expecting a good outcome.  :(

  • I agree with PP's.... There really is no such thing as night "training". They just suddenly start waking up with dry diapers. Once they have about 2 weeks straight of dry diapers when they wake up I would go ahead and stop putting them on at night. But have a mattress protector on the bed under sheets just In case. Accidents can still happen every so often.
