Total lack of pregnancy symptoms--not a bad sign!

In the few days since I have joined this board, I have seen multiple references to moms wishing that they were getting MS, aching breasts, etc. just because those things are supposed to indicate a healthy pregnancy.

I thought it may be helpful for 2nd+ time moms to weigh in on the symptoms (or lack thereof) they experienced and when because I think maybe there is some misconceptions about how early and how often these classic symptoms are supposed to start.

As for me, in my last pregnancy, I experienced nausea exactly twice, but never threw up (both times very late in the first trimester after I worked through lunch without a break), my breasts became a little tender around week 8 and that came and went for a few months, I didn't really cry at anything that I wouldn't have otherwise cried at when I wasn't pregnant, I didn't have pregnancy brain (although I was trying to do so much with preparations at work/home/etc. towards the end of my pregnancy that I did need to write things down more to keep things organized), and I got heartburn from about week 36-40.  That was it.  Other than my growing stomach, I felt great.  Exercised almost every day, worked full time until the day before I went into labor.   I gave birth to a super healthy 8 pound, 3 ounce baby girl who is now 11.5 months old.

Just wanted to provide some support and reassurance that you don't have to feel miserable in order to have a very healthy pregnancy/healthy baby!

Best of luck to all of you :)

  • this was me too.... although I failed to work out as much and quit my job early, mainly because I wanted time to relax before DS came, I knew I only had that 1 chance, HAHA! I prob had from week 8-10 where my tummy felt slightly uneasy and in the evening the only thing that sounded good enough to eat was a plain bagel with peanut butter topped with banana. Then I was good!

  • Same here, I had zero symptoms with my first! I'm talking nothing, no ms, no sore boobs, no exhaustion, no sleep problems, no heartburn, no swelling...none! I remember being 36 weeks and going down the stairs to do laundry and getting half way down and glancing down at my stomach going: "Oh that's right, I'm pregnant, I should slow down." This one is so different. I only got my BFP a week and a half ago and already have had more symptoms with this one then I did my entire first pregnancy!

  • As I am one of the ones who has expressed the desire to have morning sickness I will explain myself.

This is my 4th pregnancy.  I have an 11 yro DS who I had very little symptoms with.  My 2nd and 3rd pregnancies ended in miscarraiges.  The most recent miscarraige was in September 4 days before my wedding.  I was 6.5 weeks when I lost our LO, at that point I had sore boobs, extremely tired, hungry, and a little nausea.  Then one day while on bed rest it all ended.  I just woke up one morning and it was gone.

So now in my 4th pregnancy I'm totally paranoid.  As a rational adult I know that every pregnancy is different.  And I also know that sometimes you don't get general symptoms, or morning sickness and that does not mean your not having a healthy pregnancy.  I also know that just because you have morning sickness or other symptoms it does not mean that your having a totally healthy and normal pregnancy.  It is just the way YOUR body is reacting to the hormones in your body.

For me every symptom is a blessing and reassuring, to my paranoid state.

  • Thank you for this!  Right now I don't really have any symptoms at all except for my nice, dark, instantaneous BFPs when I tested.  I know it's still early and I will likely develop some symptoms as I go along but right now I'm just sort of sitting pretty.

  • Every one of my pregnancies have been different. My 1st I was so inexperienced and I had nothing, he'll until 7mnths I didn't gain more than 3 or 4 lbs and still had some light bleeding which means I didn't even know I was ku till 7mnths. Sounds out there but again I was so clueless I barely noticed, wasn't like I was with anyone.

pregnancy #2 my fianc? (at the time) and I were excited, I gained weight fast, but had no morning sickness or tenderness, just fatigue and cravings.

pregnancy #3 I was hormonal and ah.... Really wanting to DTD all the time I had some tenderness and a lot of breast engorgement early on, but no morning sickness just heartburn from early on.

pregnancy #4 seemed like the week after I poas I was so sick I couldn't keep anything down, landed me in the hospital even, no tenderness, hormones outta whack once 2nd tri struck lotsa bloating, and everything you can typically think of. I hope everyone's pregnancies are happy, uneventful, and super healthy!

  • I've heard of women like you lol. This is my third time around and I'm hugging the porcelain throne already! Every woman's body responds differently to pregnancy so congrats to us all...barfing or not barfing!
  • I also had no symptoms in my first pregnancy. I gained a total of 7 lbs and was never sick. I did have some heart burn in the last few weeks though. I am hoping this one goes the same way. :-)

  • during my first pregnancy I also had almost zero symptoms - no nausea, no ms, only felt queasy a few times, wasn't overly tired, boobs werent super sore (although they did get fairly big during the first tri).  I literally didnt feel pregnant, really until i started showing, and even then i felt great - no shortness of breath, trouble sleeping, heartburn, etc.  Karma came back and kicked my butt though, i had the worst delivery ever!  This time I have been having a few more symptoms - some pregnancy insomnia which of course adds to me feeling tired, hungrier than normal, on and off achy breasts, but i have only felt nauseous a few times.

  • I'm hoping for m/s to hit me hard because to this PgAL brain that's a good sign.

This is my sixth pregnancy and the two I carried to term I had horrible m/s from week 5 or 6 [DS2 it was earlier and lasted longer than DS1] and I needed medication. All three of my losses I felt no nausea and nearly no symptoms from BFP to m/c, and the second one was a mmc we didn't discover until 13w!

I kept telling DH and everyone else I talked to that the lack of symptoms worried me and then it actually turned out I was right when they kept saying it was going to be fine.

I know that every pregnancy is different but I also know if I were hugging the porcelain I would be much more at ease. That said I also recognize my m/s started at the earliest 5 weeks and with DS1 it wasn't until 6.5 weeks so I won't start to actually freak out until 7 weeks by then I have an ultrasound.
  • Thanks for posting this thread! This is my first pregnancy, and so far my only real symptom is sore breasts/nipples. It's nice to know that you don't have to have MS from the get go to have a healthy pregnancy.

  • Thanks for the reassurance, ladies. I, too, am paranoid after a m/c last August. I'm by no means wishing to be sick, and intellectually I know every pregnancy is different, but... well, you see how it is, lol. Anyhow, I hope everyone that IS feeling sick finds a way to manage it, and that it's not too severe, because I've heard horror stories, lol.

Thanks again for the reassurance for an older, pgal, ftm!
