Eat the boob!

Ladies,

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this. Recently (the past 1-2 weeks) I've noticed that LO wants to stay up during the day. That's fine he get's tired but fights naps really bad (he is 4 months today, 2 1/2 adjusted). He doesn't get really cranky but has started fighting the boob!

When he's hungry I go to feed him as usual and he actually refuses to eat off the boob! I thought I was just imagining it, but then today I offered him and he refused, so I made a bottle (only boob juice) and he drank it! It isn't a supply issue because I pump around 20+ oz a day in addition to the nursing so I know he can get it if he wants. My theory is that he knows it makes him sleepy so he is refusing.

Any other ideas?

Re: Eat the boob!

  • That, or he is liking the faster flow from the bottle. I read that babies can get particular once bottles are introduced and may want to stay on the bottle instead of going back to the boob. I had to switch B to formula because of a terrible infection so I never had to go back and forth. However, I know medela makes a bottle that helps with going back and forth between bottle and boob. I guess it's supposed to eliminate nipple confusion. I think it's called medela calma? Maybe an option?

  • I have no advice but I have been experiencing the same things with C the last three days. Never offered a bottle though. Just kept relatching and relatching.

But today I couldn't even get him to latch. So I pumped some and gave it to him and he took it all no fuss.

Idk what's up. But I cried and am pissed.

  • When K did this, I went and saw lactation. They told me she "just isn't hungry". But this is also when she was still feeding on a schedule due to jaundice. So if your LO is then taking a bottle, it does sound like what the PP said. Bottles are a lot easier. But if he's only had a few bottles, he may not have confusion yet. Maybe see lactation or at the very least, head over to the breastfeeding board. They are pretty helpful! Good luck!

I'm sorry. I've noticed K does the frequent relatching when she is passing gas. It's like she's a man and can't do two things at once! I hope your LO nurses for you next time!

  • I've found sometimes I need to calm down DS with a paci and then I can switch the paci for the boob.

Sometimes he needs to get all his smiles or poop out first.  Smile

Also, sometimes I think he's willing to skip a feeding for some extra sleep!

  • D does this a little bit, but it seems to me like he is getting impatient. Sometimes when he does this I stimulate the nipple before hand to try and get a good flow going first then get him to latch.

  • Ladies,

thank you for all the responses! LO was a preemie and had an NG tube and bottles in the NICU. Once he could and got the hang of BF he just took off! Loved it! Then he only got a bottle on night feeds.

I don't know what's up but I'm thinking it could be the gas thing. He has been pretty gassy. And I do often have to burp him even between breasts and breast feeding.

Rachel--I'm sorry that Cu wouldn't perma latch and you have to give a bottle. I know I would get really frustrated when I was trying to teach LJ to latch and some days he could and others not. I think they just are developing little eating habits and quirks just like us. Here's hoping its just a phase for all our babes!

  • Girls, keep trying! My little one was in the NICU and I wasn't able to immediately nurse him so he took a bottle initially. For 2 weeks I was only able to pump and feed him with a bottle because he refused to latch (hadn't learned). I just kept trying to get him to latch and he never would. Finally on the day I thought I had had enough, I stuck him to me one more time and voi-la! (sp? hehe) Once he began nursing, I went probably six weeks before I offered him a bottle. Now he is able to transition breast to bottle fine. Although, he only has a bottle if I'm away. I never give him one when I'm around.

If you truly want to nurse, keep trying and don't lose hope. Good luck!
