I know your LO has eczema and I was wondering if he gets it on his face? Sophia usually gets it on her wrist, arms and legs but it's on her face now. Right under her nose, chin and cheeks. Aquaphor works pretty well but I really don't want to put anything on her face because she's constantly rubbing her eyes and nose. Do you use anything on his face if that's where he gets it?
Re: :::JnK:::
His first year he had it on his cheeks. It was so bad that it was constantly open and getting infected. The only way we got it in under control was through the use of a Rx strength antibiotic cream and Rx strength hydrocortisone cream from the dermatologist.
And, it's really weird to me that she's getting it where you're describing because, no joke, the allergist we saw yesterday said that this is the most uncommon area to get it. It's almost always spared from eczema.
As for treatment, if you can get your hands on the creams, I would recommend it. The bacteria in the open wounds can then be spread to her eyes and nose. I'd put it on her and then put huge bandaids on. It all just sucks, but you don't want to spread bacteria, and the creams would make amazing results in just an overnight treatment. Even if you don't do the hydrocortisone, you NEED to use an antibacterial cream like Neosporin. There is likely some kind of bacteria in there because it's so exposed.
If it's not open and oozing but just dry, I'd switch from Aquafor to Vaseline petroleum jelly. It's purer (in that it has fewer ingredients) than Aquafor. And, it's the only thing that doesn't irritate Otis' already open and inflamed wounds.
I must say, I have so much sympathy for these kids. It's pretty awful stuff and I always feel like I'm behind the 8 ball int terms of treating it. I can't ever seem to get it under control. Hopefully, the blood test reveals some results and I can help him out.
Oh, Shan, it's totally fine for her to eat this stuff or get it in her eyes. People use this stuff as chap stick or lip moisturizer. Vaseline petroleum jelly is totally fine. So is Aquafor in that regard. It's when you start getting into the Rx strength stuff that you need to worry about ingestion.
If she gets it into her eyes, it's going to blur her vision a bit, but a few blinks will get it moved to the corner of her eyes. It's totally non-toxic. She'll be fine.
As for eating it, I let O help me put it on himself. Sometimes that means the fingertip worth of Vaseline goes straight into his mouth. No worries.
It's totally safe. That's one of the reasons I don't hesitate to use it and to use it liberally. He gets lathered up 5-6 times per day.
I hope you find some relief for her. It's so rough for them. Let me know if you find anything that works. I'd be willing to try it as well.
