Babies: 6 - 9 Months

xp: from breastfeeding page - extreme weight loss????

Hi Mamas,  I NEVER thought this would be something I would worry about... but i have been EBF my son for nearly 6 months (in 10 days!) and my weight is getting so low, that I am at least 10 lbs under my pre preg weight -and I gained 60 lbs!  I am not working out and I am eating around the clock... and I am getting a bit concerned.  That might sound crazy but I wanted to see if anyone has had similar experiences... I dont know if I need to go to a dr to see if everything is OK with me or if this is due to the breastfeeding.  My son is a very hefty nearly-6 month old - clocking into the 90%iles for height and weight.. and he eats every 3 hours (or I pump at work) except at night...  just wondering if this is something I should just be grateful for and enjoy while it lasts as a benefit of breastfeeding... or if I should see a dr myself... any advice would be really appreciated!

  • I'm pretty sure you are the only woman I've ever seen be upset about weight loss-- haha. But I would be grateful for it!

I had to stop breast feeding because I wasn't producing enough, but when I was breastfeeding I lost a lot of my baby weight and then some!

If you are concerned- I would go to the doc but if not, just go with it and enjoy it while you can before you stop BFing.

  • You might want to go make sure your thyroid is ok. It is commonly affected by pregnancy. Weight loss despite eating more than adequate calories is a symptom of hyperthyroidism.
  • You sound so similar to me!  I only gained 30 lbs with my pregnancy, but after 6 mos of BFing I was 22 lbs below my pre pregnancy weight.  I did have a generous supply, but I wouldnt say I had a huge oversupply or anything.  My doctor wasn't concerned as long as I was eating often, enough, and nutritiously.  My son was definitely growing, so he was getting enough nutrition as well. Do you feel well?  Do you have enough energy?  If you are that concerned, ask your doctor.
  • Thanks to everyone...I was anxious to post this bc it sounds weird i know it I think I will go get my thyroid checked for sure. My energy is good and I am eating a lot.... But maybe not 600 cal more? Either way, good idea and will get my thyroid checked for sure... Glad to know I'm not alone though :)

  • I'm glad you posted this...the same thing is happening to me, and I'm starting to worry about my weight loss.  My daughter is 8 months and I EBF...I'm 15 pounds below my pre preg weight, and I was thin before.  I eat when I'm hungry.  I'll probably ask my dr about it.

Glad I could surface it for you too then! Don't hear this often so glad to know we aren't alone...

  • Very interesting. I gained a little over 30 pounds and I'm now a few pounds under my pre-pregnancy weight. Besides walking a couple times a week, I haven't really done anything. I eat to hunger, but I've been wondering lately if I'm not getting enough calories in. I actually have low supply issues, so I'm suspicious that it may be a result of needing to eat more.
