As many of y'all know, we recently had to let our nanny go because we found out she was smoking on the job while watching (or not watching) our LO. And she had repeateldly lied about it. Her excuse when my husband confronted her with undeniable proof of her smoking was, "I didn't smoke around the baby." So, in other words, she was leaving him unattended to go outside in smoke on my dime and then exposing him to 3rd hand smoke when she came back in the house.
Obviously, we no longer felt comfortable leaving LO in her care even for a day and the past 2 work weeks have been crazy because we have had to scramble for childcare. I'm an attorney and DH is a physician in private parctice so neither one of us has jobs where we can just take off without notice. I even had to work from home one day because we couldn't find replacement care for that day...and didn't get much work done. And my parents had to come in from 6 hours away and stay to help.
Well, the drama continues. I got this email yesterday from the crazy, smoking nanny:
Hello IBackBevo and Husband,
Just a quick note to let you both know that I DID NOT receive the balance of my pay in the mail. I patiently waited two weeks and I have not heard from you.
I must confess, I thought more highly of you both and I had respect for the professionalism at hand. However, it is NOT. a suprise when you have to fight for what is owed to youin back pay. I am not sure why you feel you must play games with my paycheck. Could you possible call me or email me and let me know what day is convenient for me to come by and get the remainder of my check.
Thanks,
Nanny
My husband told her when he let her go (which was on MLK day) that we would send her last check in the mail. First, let me clarify her "last check" was for one, partial day - so it was for $80. Second, she was normally paid on the 15th (had already received that check) and the first day of the month. So she got paid on January 15th and was owed $80 for the period she worked from Jan. 16-31st. So she sent us this email ON THE SAME DAY her check was due to her accusing us of being two weeks late on the payment and acting like somehow we were trying to get out of paying her. We have even already put the check in the mail. Even if we would have put the check in the mail the day after we let her go (the day we let her go was MLK day), it still would have only been like 10 days--not 2 weeks. I could see sending out an email like this if you were owed hundreds or thousands of dollars and it is months later and you have repeatedly called asking to be paid...but this was the first contact we have had from her since letting her go and we had told her we would pay her...and her check wasn't even late!!!
I am just dumb founded. This lady is truly out of her ever-loving mind. I am so glad we let her go now. I mean, I was glad before, but now I have zero doubt in my mind and I don't even feel bad about the fact that she is now out of a job.
The only thing that leaves a bad feeling in the pitt of my stomach is that it makes me scared about hiring another Nanny. She didn't seem like a smoking, lying looney when we hired her. And her references checked out. How do I know I'm not going to be leaving my child in the care of another lying looney who will put my child's health in harm's way again?

TTC #2
After months of being postponed or cancelled, FET #1.3 (Natural FET) brought us twin girls!
Definitely this. What a drama queen. We were very lucky to find a trustworthy nanny that has been with us since DS was 8 months old. But I was definitely appalled by the lack of professionalism and respect other candidates displayed before we found her. I know you will find someone to fit your needs and that will give your LO all of the care and attention you expect her to. Good luck with your search.

I have, but my little guy was a little premature, IUGR and has not been able to tae breast milk due to a milk protein allergy and GERD (so essentially has no immune system)...plus, I live in a major city and we are having an RSV outbreak, a noravirus outbreak AND a flu outbreak. My DH once had noravirus and it almost killed him...and he is a healthy adult. LO is currently only on the 3rd percentile for weight and I feel like he could end up in the hospital very easily so I really hate to put him in daycare right now with all of this going on and it being winter.

This is not to place blame in any way, but in my experience, every job I've had where I've had to play a part in firing people you always cut their final check to give them when you tell them they are terminated. That way you don't need to make any further contact with them. We'd also usually wait until a Friday, that is supposed to be the best time to fire someone so they have the weekend to cool down, rather than coming back the next day to make a scene.
Anyway, since the check is already in the mail it is a non-issue now. But I'd explain you were waiting until the next regular payday to issue it.
Have you had any luck finding a new nanny?
