Hi!

You've answered many of my baby wearing questions in the past and I constantly refer to your blog! So I thank you for that :)

I had a question about mei tai carriers. I currently have the Infantino Sash and I love the mei tai style but HATE this carrier... it's super stiff and the straps are very uncomfortable, they cut in everywhere. So I've been looking into so many different kinds and have always loved your custom ObiMama that you reviewed on your blog (the blue/green one with the butterfly), it looks so comfortable. So my question is this... I've looked into the ObiMamas and I've been stalking swaps looking for one (since it seems so hard to actually get one straight from her) but I have can't tell if they are the same style as the one in your picture... (how the straps fan out and seem to be a thinner material but padded at the top by your neck, if that makes sense)... are they? Will a normal ObiMama be like that? I can't tell by the mannequin pictures.

Are there any other carries you would suggest that are similar to the ObiMama in your picture? I really like the curves in the body of it, the thinner fabric straps and how the straps fan out like that across your whole back. You also said they are great for warm weather, and I'll be having a summer baby (looking to wear both my NB and 18month DD in it, not at the same time of course lol) so that sounds wonderful and the one you have looks like it is nice and airy... however the mei tais ObiMama shows on her FB page and website appear to be really thick/heavy materials... not summer like at all.

Sorry this was so long :)

Re: ncbelle

  • Hi  - Glad the blog is helpful!  Sadly Obimamas have gotten very hard to come by since i wrote that post :(  They are nice MTs but there are plenty of other MTs out there that are easier to come by.  And the resell market on these has gone sadly out of control (we are talking over $500).

The straps on it are a padded to wrap style strap.  She does do those although her current version is a bit different (better I think) - I'm pretty sure that's her default shoulder strap unless you ask for something different.

The one in my blog post is a "featherweight" carrier.  She also does wrap conversions which may be what you see online that looks heavier?  MIne was just a 3 layer linen body with her gauze straps.

I'm honestly a bit out of the loop on all the new MT makers - some seem to come and go.  I would caution to only buy from someone who is a BCIA member and compliant with the new regulations.

You may find it hard to get a MT thats a perfect fit for both a newborn and a toddler, particularly if you want a legs out newborn.  I prefer a non-padded waist MT like the babyhawk for a young baby (although those don't have wrap style straps) and a bigger bodied MT for a toddler (the Kozy would be one easy to find brand but again without wrap style straps).  It might also be worth looking at the FSOT board on the baby wearer for a MT with the straps you are hoping to find.

    HTH!
