Torticollis/Flat spot

Has anyone had experience with this? We have an appt to see our pedi on Wednesday but wanted to know if anyone here had any advice. DS #2 defiantly has a flat spot and limited neck movement. Are they stretches to do? Would sleeping in the swing help? Any other advice? We do as much tummy time as we can, but with DS1 it is a lot harder to get it done! Thanks in advance!

Re: Torticollis/Flat spot

  • DD had torticollis and a flat spot that almost required a helmet (thankfully not needed).  Here is a link to some of the stretches our specialist recommended.  They really helped.

As far as the flat spot, we did use the swing for naps, and bedtime.  We have the snuggle bunny FP swing which allowed us to prop up different sides of her head so she wouldn't always be on the same spot..if that makes sense.  HTH

  • I have no experience with this at all but when DS was in his bouncy seat, swing, etc. we used this Boppy head support pillow. It is "supposed" to reduce the incidence of flat spots but who knows.

  • Gator was born with a flat spot where she was laying against my pelvis. We saw a specialist and it was so minor she didn't need a helmet and it eventually popped out. Her cousin had torticollis and a flat spot and the specialist told her to give her as much time off her head as possible, like tummy time, and if in a swing/bouncer/carseat, roll up a blanket and put it against her head so the flat spot isn't being laid on.

  • Lei had a horrible flat spot at the back of his head.

It takes some time for it to show its working but within a few months it was gone. Plus once he is old enough to be in a jumperoo he will have more time off his head.

  • Thanks the responses. We have the noggin nest and need to use it more. We thought we should switch him to sleeping in the swing like some of you said. And I'm going to check out the stretches for his neck. Also maybe the pedi will have some advice and hopefully its not too bad.

  • Another dumb question - would a rock n play help or hinder?

  • B had a flat spot on his left side. It was significant and his ear had pushed forward and had a slight ridge on his forehead. We caught it early, before 3 months, and were able to do extreme positinaly therapy. Honestly the positional therapy was hard and I worked around the clock to ensure he was never on his left side.., ever! The only time he was allowed on his back was sleeping and even then I had to wedge him to his right an check on him and roll him back to the right side every couple hours during the night. We used the jolly jumper and exersaucer all the time to let him play in an upright position and we used the bumbo for a bit, but he wasn't really a fan. We also put him in the high chair early so we could put him down with no pressure to his head. It was hard but it paid off, his ears are aligned now and the ridge is barely there. He still has a slight flat spot, but you can't see it at all and it is rounding out nicely. Because of the significance of the intial flat spot we were told that it would be completely rounded by 2 years old. I did a lot of research on the use of helmet therapy and in Canada it is usually only used as a last resort and not typically advised, I am happy with our choice! I should also mention that he had full range of motion in his neck and didn't require physiotherapy, but he had a big side preference which is what caused the flat spot, we did do some exercises that encouraged him to turn his head one side to the other.

  • Yes, I have a friend that had some problems with flat spots on her baby's head. Have you tried a Tortle? It's a little beanie hat with a padded positional roll that allows you to take the pressure off certain spots of the head. It's only around $20, and definitely worth checking out! She used it on her DD and it did the trick! Here is the webiste  - www.tortle.com.
