IUGR

Anybody else out there have a growth restricted LO? Just found out today, and having a really hard time handling it. I now have to go in for weekly sonos to check him out, and an emergency delivery is possible. So stressed and totally not ready mentally or physically for him to be here. Anyone else coping with this? Advice?

Re: IUGR

  • My baby has IUGR too. I go in for weekly BPPs and NSTs. It's stressful but I've known since 28 weeks and I'm 34 now. You just roll with it. My baby has made significant strides and went from a possible induction at 33 weeks to a scheduled induction on February 25 which will be 38 weeks as long as she continues on this growth pattern, this could change anytime though. I know that it's upsetting but try not to worry. It legitimately causes more problems for the baby. If you want to PM me for some more details or support let me know. You and your baby are in my thoughts and prayers.

ETA: To help calm down, get organized. I had nothing ready but I have since set up everything I could in the bedroom, washed and put away all clothes and linens, and made it so if she were to come home tomorrow we would survive. I have been doing a ton of deep cleaning too. It just makes me feel a thousand times better to have the place ready anytime!

  • Both of my babies have been IUGR babies. With DS, I went for twice weekly sonograms and was induced at 36 weeks since it was a placenta problem. He was 5 pounds 3 oz at birth but healthy!

This LO, I've only known for 3 weeks and have been going weekly since then. I'll be having a growth ultrasound Friday so I'm anxious to get an estimate on his size and see what the plans are.

If you have any questions, please ask!

My son is also diagnosed with IUGR.nbsp; His weight is low but within normal limits. The concern is his head and abdomen are very tiny.nbsp; I guess the abdomen is the biggest concern.nbsp; I am on weekly NSTs and biweekly ultrasounds.
Out of curiosity, what percentile is your baby falling into?nbsp; I haven't been told with my son but I guess there isn'tnbsp;the overall percentile doesn't matter has much for my DSnbsp;because he has asymetrical IUGR vs symmetrical.nbsp; They did say his head and abdomen are about 4 weeks behind and his femur is 1.5 weeks behind.

Do they know what is causing the growth restriction? My baby is asymmetrical as well and has a head that is perfect but the abdomen was 6 weeks behind at my latest growth scan. They think mine is caused by a placental issue.

Why exactly did you get induced? My baby's IUGR is due to a placental problem also. We are hoping to get to 38 weeks. Did your baby stop growing completely? Or was not making adequate strides?

No, his growth never stopped or dropped dramatically but my placenta was prematurely aging so they didn't want to risk anything going past 36 weeks. I was diagnosed at 28 weeks and knew then I would not go past 36 weeks.

  • I've known that I would have this problem since my early anatomy scan because she has a single artery umbilical cord.  It was scary at first but we decided to have an amnio done to rule out any genetic issues associated with the umbilical cord.  I now go for NST twice a week and U/S every week, in which they measure her growth every other week and check bloodflow every week.  I go for my next growth scan tomorrow.  I'm OK with it, there is nothing I can do and stress isn't going to help her grow.  They told me she is in the 12th percentile.  At my last scan she measured 3lbs 8 ounces and she should have been over 4 pounds at that point.  I'm just making sure I eat healthy and get enough sleep at this point.  My baby's head is almost on track, her legs and arms are a little behind and her belly is the furthest behind growth, about 2.5 weeks.  They say the umbilical cord will cause the baby to have a smaller tummy so she will be really skinny when she is born.

Good luck and try not to worry!  I'm sure everything will be fine.

  • Thanks for all the advice ladies! He is in the 7th percentile, head is right on track, but limb length is what's bringing us down. I'm 35 weeks on Tuesday, so if we have to deliver early it's going to be SOON! Dr said there may be an umbilical cord issue, and we're keeping an eye on it. Just praying that he stays in there as long as possible! For now I am just scrambling to get everything together!
