Re: Shettles Method

  • I don't know much about it but it's the timing of conception that determines boy or girl, right?

  • Before O= girl
    O and after=boy
This is my understanding. Boys are faster swimmers, but they don't last as long as female swimmers, which can live up to 48 hours I believe. I was going to try that method this month. My MIL swears by it, so I want to see if she has something here....

  • Have sex 2-4 days before O for a girl, the further away from O the better. Have sex 1 day before - O day for a boy.
  • To prove it works you only have sex 1 time that "time frame"?

  • The other ladies explained the basics. I never really read much about it, only the basic concept of timing intercourse around your O date. It worked for us both times, and both times I knew my exact day of ovulation. From other posts I've read about it, it doesn't work for everyone for some reason.

Also, I'd like to add that I didn't seriously plan it - it just kind of happened that way, though it happened to be what I wanted (boy first, girl second). With DS, I was so afraid of taking a long time to get pregnant that as soon as I noticed signs that I'd be ovulating that day, I jumped DH out of fear of missing another opportunity. (My cycles are loooong, I'd missed my O day the last cycle, and it was our last chance within the time-frame we needed for DS to be born before his deployment.) With LO2, I actually thought it wouldn't work out because it was so long (like, 4 days) between DTD and Oing. I vaguely remember being irritated at DH that week, which is why I didn't do the same as with DS (jump him on my O day). I knew I'd be Oing within a few days when we DTD, but wasn't sure how many days it would be.

  • They all summed it up well. It certainly can lower you chance of getting pregnant if you are anal about it. We tried it this past month and are KU. So we shall see! I really don't care either way, I just want a full term baby this go round, but h wanted to give it a try. Bless his heart, he abstained for 4 days and still may not get a boy. ha!

I remember reading a discussion on another board where a poster said it doesn't work. I believe her comment was, "We wouldn't have three girls if it worked." I've heard that it's easier to try for a boy than for a girl, though, so GL to you!

And the reality is that even someone whose cycles are pretty regular still ovulates on a different day here or there.  And you can really only guess when O will be based on past cycles and a slight shift changes how you fall in the world of Shettles.  My first pregnancy was a CD15 O, my second a CD13.  That two day difference could screw things up if I was worried about sex selection.  O can't be confirmed until after it's already happened.

    Bottom line, you've got a fifty-fifty chance.  :)

Personally with only a 20% of even conceiving each month, I'm of the mind that when I'm TTC I'm going to maximize my chance of baby.  But there's probably too much former TTGPer in me as the term baby dancing makes me roll my eyes and not trying but not preventing is also a silly concept to me.  Shettles goes in that group for me as too, though I know some people swear by it.

It is true that male sperm are faster and shorter-lived and the opposite true for female sperm, doesn't mean that sex a couple days prior to O can't produce a boy though.

If you want to see a unique look into conception, search for 'The Great Sperm Race' on YouTube.  It's kind of fascinating and awe-inducing to realize how amazing it is to actually conceive.

This. And and according to Shettles,  Scott should be a girl.  I would not get my hopes up using that method.  I doubt that the percentages change that dramatically.
