Baby Names

Jacob vs Jake

I thought DH and I agreed on Jake. We both love the name. DH brought up that he would like his legal name to be Jacob. That it sounds more official. That Jake sounds like a nickname. Also every Jake he knows is a Jacob. We would call him Jake.

I'm having a hard time with this. I don't care for the name Jacob, never had. I know it will bother me hearing someone call him Jacob. I wish DH would change his mind. As of now Jake looks like its off the table.

I know Jake is a name on its own. DH doesn't think so.

Re: Jacob vs Jake

  • Have you considered another name? If this bothers you then maybe that would be the best choice.

Me, too! However, if you don't agree on this, it might be time to look for another name. Good luck!

  • I agree with your DH too.  Jake may be very common as a nickname, but it's derived from Jacob and is, to my mind, clearly a nickname, not a name on its own.  I think at the very least it would be kind of a pain in the neck to be named Jake and have people constantly assume your full name is Jacob.  Plus (see the Ally post below) a lot of people like having a name that gives them the option of both a nickname and a formal name.  But then, I like Jacob, so for me it's a no-brainer I would use it.  If you don't like it and your DH doesn't want to use Jake on its own, then I think you have to start from scratch.

  • I prefer a 'full' name and sometimes usings a NN. But if you're going to call him Jake 100% of the time I'd name him that.

  • Oh no I'm out numbered lol. We do have other names in mind. We just can't finialize it, and I keep going back to Jake. Thanks for the input ladies.
  • I am with both of you.  Haha.  I do think Jake is a nn for Jacob, but I don't like Jacob at all.  Tough one!

    I am. Are you?
  • I'm with you on this one. All the Jakes I've had in my class have been just Jake, I think it's a stand alone name.

I feel the same..... and for this reason I'd probably try to find another name.

  • I think this is the same as the Luke/Lucas debate. To me, Jake is a standalone name. And I agree with you -- I like Jake, but dislike Jacob. Good luck!

  • I agree with your husband.  What about naming him Jack with Jake as a NN?

  • I don't know what the big deal is if you are always going to call him Jake anyway. You will hardly ever have to hear his full name. This gives him a more formal name he can go by later in life, if he so chooses. Plus, I personally like Jacob infinitely better than just Jake.
