Opinion on our names :)

As I posted before, I'm new to the board :). I was due yesterday.

We still haven't completly decided on names...I hate it! We are team green.

We love the name Maddison. What do you ladies like better?
-Maddison Ruby (named after my younger brother ruben, who i'm very close with)
-or Maddison Gerrie (its a dutch name. would be named after my dad Gerald and both my hubby and my Oma's)

I think we finally decided on a boy name. Liam Kyle (Kyle is my hubby's name). What do you think?

Re: Opinion on our names :)

  • I'd go with Maddison Gerrie for the family-name reason. :)

    I agree with this :)

The boy name does't flow really but it's also got solid family meaning too so I like it :)

  • Peanut, I understand your point, but that whole post was pretty rude.
  • lol wow. For the record, I have a common name with traditional spelling, but I have to correct people often because so many others with my name have wild, alternate spellings. And I was born in the 80's, so...

2 D's = no biggie, IMO. Maddie has 2 D's, so why not Maddison? Some people are way too legalistic about the naming thing ;)

OMG!  squee!  I luuuuv them all! You are awesome and should TOTALLY ask the Internet (and specifically women in their last month of pregnancy who are highly uncomfortable) for opinions if all you want is validation and not real unbiased opinions!

    Better?

    BAHAHAHA!

Anyway, I don't think your original post was rude, Peanut, but I happen to agree with you.  I implore all parents who are spelling their children's names... ummm... differently... to reconsider for the very reason you mentioned.  It will be a lifetime of corrections.  But in the end, OP, it's your choice and we, on the internet, have no real say.

  • Oh and to your original question, OP, I like the flow with Ruby better.

    I LOVE your boy name!!

I agree. I'm a Meghan, and no one EVER spells my name right. Even people that know me well (like cousins, inlaws, friends). My MIL had a personalized Christmas stocking made for me a few years ago, and spelled my name wrong. They spelled my name wrong on my driver's license application. I like my name and I like how it's spelled (I think it looks prettier than Megan) but I hate that I constantly have to correct people. And it has definitely influenced how I am naming my children.

I also hated as a kid that the little tourist traps with personalized keychains and license plates and stuff never had my name. It sounds silly, but it really hurt my feelings as a kid. :(

    Better?

I'm not even sure how to respond to that.  She wasn't even asking about the spelling of Maddison, just about middle names.  I wouldn't go with an alternate spelling, but can't see why it's my business to interject that opinion onto someone else when it wasn't requested.  At least not in such a bratty manner.

  • Anyway, OP, I prefer Ruby as the middle name
  • I prefer Madison Ruby. I agree with Peanut and other posters about the spelling. I think one "d" looks much better.

  • Oh yeah I forgot I didn't know about common decency because I don't hang out on forums enough.  Dang, I ought to work on that.
  • Good lord. My name is Winter, WINTER and people still ask for spelling.

Go with whatever you want for spelling. They're gonna spell it wrong either way.

    I like gerrie. It's unique.

And I absolutely love the name Liam.

Haha completely agree! I like ruby better but am torn because family tradition is important with me, buuuut they both have family in them so I'd go with Ruby in the end, super adorable. It's so cute your giving LO DH's name as a middle if its a boy, I wish I could turn DH name into a girl name so we could use it for a middle, but his name is Joshua

  • Maddison.  It's so common, but not that spelling.  I wouldn't use it.  Why not do Ruby as a first name?  Ruby is adorable and the meaning behind it makes it even more special.

    Love your boy name.

  • Wowie! didn't mean for this to get into an argument between too posters! Ladies, please stop fighting!
In the end i'm actually kind of glad that the whole 1 d or 2 d's was brought up, because hubby and I have been talking about that my entire pregnancy. We knew we loved maddison but didn't know what the proper spelling was supposed to be! I actually can't stand correcting people on the spelling of my name, I've done it my entire life. My name is Marilyn, like Marilyn monroe, Marilyn Manson (if you will) and NO ONE  has ever spelt my name right!!
But again, I ask, stop fighting! Its so ridiculous!

I like Liam Kyle as well...but it doesn't flow nice and that kills me. But is that ok? how many times do you say both names?

Ruby, Gerrie, what am I gonna do?! Its been Ruby from the very beginning, Gerrie wasn't thrown into the mix until last night. I love that my dad would have grandchild named after him. this is grandchild #12 for him, and not one is named after him. hmmmm

this :) I had to double check I was on the feb board

  • Also, I like Ruby better - that's our mn if this is a girl. And I already have a Liam :)
  • I think Liam Kyle flows well.  You could do William Kyle and call him Liam if you like that flow better.

    Hehe.  I love you, Runaway.

OP, I like Ruby.  As for Madison or Maddison, it doesn't matter.  I have a classic name and it has a 'z' in it, people replace it with an 's'.  My daughter's first name is Isabelle and she is always getting Isabella or Isabel.  With the onset of making a name unique, people forget the uniqueness comes from the child and their name is only a beginning in a lifetime of personality.  Though I do recommend staying away from names that have awful nicknames, LOL.

    This.

And I'm no help on the Ruby/Gerrie thing cause I feel the same way you do; I like Ruby better, but the sentimentality of Gerrie might just trump all! Hard call.

  • I <3 the names Ruby and Gerrie because I'm born in July and that is my birthstone & also because I love the Grateful Dead and love Jerry Garcia but all in all...Madison Ruby sounds the best to me. I also like just one D, it is simple and beautiful. It looks better in writing too! Double D's are overwhelming, lol. Liam Kyle sounds fine to me, a lot of people said it didn't flow..but I think it sounds cute together. Good luck! Let us know what you end up with.
