S/O Baptisms

I was baptized Catholic and DH was Methodist. By the time we both were older, we weren't going to church or involved very much ( we were kicked out of the Catholic Church when my parents divorced, long story). DH and I started going to the Methodist church we were married at about a year before we got married, then we stopped for no real reason. DH has now expressed an interest in raising K in the church and wanting to get her baptized. As much as I would like to do it where we were married, that church is no longer close to where we live. So we have found a new Methodist church near by. My question is, where did you have you LO baptized? Is it weird that we will be walking in and requesting a baptism at a church we've never been to? We plan on continuing to attend this church after her baptism.

  • I don't think it's weird at all, especially if you want to attend after the baptism.  We did something similar.  We don't frequent church often and we moved to a new area so we contacted the closest catholic church.  DS was baptized last weekend.  They were very welcome and accommodating.

  • I don't think it is weird but I really don't know much about baptisms.

DH is Roman Catholic, not practicing, but decided he wanted LO baptized in the church. Which is not an easy feat since we were not married in the church. I did find a Catholic church that will do it as long as one parent was baptized in the church and you have a sponsor/godparent who has been confirmed in the church.

I also have to attend a class, since I'm the heathen! I will say it is very strange to arrange a baptism for a religion I do not believe in. I feel very lost with all of the customs and traditions that DH's family is expecting.

This is why I am ok with having K baptized Methodist. When my parents divorced, I was 12 and my brother was 15. Seeing as Catholics feel strongly about divorce, the only way we could continue in the church was if we went to "cleansing classes". My mom refused to send us because she said the divorce had nothing to do with my brother and I. And when DH and I started attending the Methodist church, I felt like I belonged there. DH and I feel that K can get as into the church as much she wants when she is older, we just want to set a foundation for her to build off.

Yeah I am not sure why the children need cleansing. It is not as if you guys were the sinners. Not that divorce is a sin IMO, but YKWIM.  Organized religion is weird!

  • DD was baptised in the same church we were married which is about 20 minutie away. We usually attain the one in our town. We did it there mostly because it was near where we were having the party afterwards, and because our parish office was kind of difficult to get a hold of and plan.

  • Not weird at all! Glad you've found a new church close to home. Our little one will be baptized next week! :) My husband was raised Christian Reformed and I've been in Methodist, Assembly of God and Baptist churches. (We moved a lot. My dad was in the Navy.) So he and I decided to have a dedication at my home church and a baptism at the CRC church we attend.
