We're in a book rut as she's totally over the simplistic "This is a dog." "This is a square." type board books, but isn't really ready for the next set of books we have a ton of which are really long, like Lyle Lyle Crocodile or Madeline or such. Somehow we ended up with a boat load of board books and a boat load of books that look for maybe the 4 year old set, but nothing in between.
Anyone have some good in between simplistic board books and long stories to recommend?
She really likes Olivia books, so something that length would be perfect.

I'm not a huge help because my kid is loving Super hero books currently. We love the Pookie books, sesame street books, books about different animals. A lot of times we can find some descent board books in the $1 section at Target or at Dollar Tree. There's a baby einstein book I found that is the first "look and find" book that he really enjoys. ETA he really likes the David books. He has "Oh, David" and I need to buy him "David gets in trouble", "David smells", "No, David", and "Oops, A Diaper David"
Hazel loves the little engine that could! The one we have is a board book and it says it's an abridged version, but it's still a decent length. I haven't seen the original version recently so I can't compare lengths of the abridged vs full-length stories.
She also really loves chicken soup with rice by Maurice Sendak, which was my favorite book as a kid. It's got a short rhyming poems about soup for each month of the year. I find it to be an age-appropriate length.
We probably have the same abridged version of The Little Engine that Could. I started out editing it even more when I read it to him and slowly expanded the amount that I ready per page as he got older. Now he'll usually pay attention to the whole book.
Thanks for the reminder about Chicken Soup with Rice missmuffin - I loved that book as a kid.
In our house slightly longer books that B loves include Corduroy's Christmas Surprise (to the point that I despise that book), Clifford the Big Red Dog, Corduroy, The Night Before Christmas, Busy Boats, Llama Llama Red Pajama, and Dr Seuss and PD Eastman books (Go Dogs Go, Big Dog Little Dog, Are you My Mother?, Dr Brown Can Moo Can You).

His favorite right now is I Love You Stinky Face.
I adore "I love you stinky face"!! You reminded me I need to start reading that to J again.
Go Dog, Go! He is hysterical reading this book.
Penguin & Pinecone is his other recent fave. He got them both for his bday.
Oh my goodness, DS is obsessed with this book! He calls it "dog go go", though. Hello. Do you like my hat?
He also likes most of the Dr Seuss books, and Curious George!
Jackson loves this Baby Einstein book. I got it as a shower gift and it is neat to see how much he's grown with it. I just gave it to my niece and nephew for Christmas. It might be my new baby shower add on.
Our new favorites are "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" and a Sandra Boynton book "Barnyard Dance". He also really likes a box set of Caillou books that my mom got him. He's a little Caillou obsessed right now.
At that part, J always says "Nooooooooooooooo" in a sing-song voice. It is cute.
Goodnight Moon she completes some of the sentences and loves to point out the different objects
For Just One Day number one fav right nowcute rhymes about little kids dreaming of being different animals
A goodnight activity/quiet book from Orvis I think
We really seem to be stuck in a book rut and I've been reaching for new ones on our shelves to change things up. This is a great post for ideas. Hello library!
ETA sorry about the punctuation. Bumping from my phone.
Snowmen at Night, a book about Bugs with popouts, and Let's Grow a Rainbow are his faves right now. Also, Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site. But lots of others on the list get read, too!
LOL
the last few pages are so much fun to read. MH doesn't let us read it before bed b/c it gets DS all hyper.
I second the Little Blue Truck, Jack loves that one!
Wow, I have too many in my mind right now, we have a lot of favorites. My personal favorite is 'I am a Bunny', I just think it's beautiful and there is a lot to talk about in the pictures, but it's really simple and has a nice flow. He also requests it a lot at bedtime.
I have a lot of books from when I was a kid that he loves, so we read a lot of Golden Books. 'The Color Kittens' is a really cute one.
Sheep in a jeep
Fox in socks
If you take a mouse to school
Mr. Dog
Rainbow fish
A day at the market by Sara Anderson
Three little kittens
I love you as big as the world
Little blue truck
Booboo
Gossie and gertie
Also high on his list are any Dr. Seuss, The Giving Tree, and this Mo Willem book called "Should I share my Ice Cream?" It's kinda cute.
