I hope you don't mind me posting here but thought perhaps someone could help.
I am 5dpiui and just found out I have the MTHFR mutation. I am now on extra folic acid but am worried that if I would happen to be pregnant that something would be wrong with the baby. I have been on a prenatal for probably 18 months or so since we have been ttc #2. But had I know about this I would have waited to cycle to get more frolic acid in my system.
Anyone find out about mthfr during pregnancy? Any words of wisdom?
Re: XP MTHFR
My Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist (who I see bc of MTHFR, FVL, & Prothrombin) said that MTHFR used to be something they kind of freaked out about, but now as long as you're taking folic acid, it's really not a big deal, the biggest worry is for neural tube defects. At my 8wk US he could already assure us that baby did not have spina bifida, and said keep taking the folic acid and really don't worry about it.
How much folic acid is in the prenatal you've been taking? Mine has 800 mcg, but many have 400 mcg instead. I take 800 mcg folic acid twice a day in addition to what's in my prenatal. My doctor said I needed at least 400mcg 2x daily, but more would not hurt, so I'm doing the higher dose.
My sister tested positive for the 3 I listed above at about 14 weeks, and started the protocol for each at 16 weeks. My nephew had no issues related to the MTHFR and is now a happy & healthy 3 year old. The rest of my siblings & I got tested soon after she found out she was positive, and I'm the only other one who is also positive. I started Folic Acid (400 mcg 2x daily) as soon as I knew, and only bumped it to the higher dose after my BFP. Hope this helps!
you will be fine. My MFM todl me once the RE saw a HB for me to come in. I saw my MFM at 6w5d, he then told me to take extra folic acid and started me on lovenox shots.
Some women can have normal pregnancies with the MTHFR and some don't. For me, they said the folic acid didn't do anything. I was taking four times the amount in a pre-natal in previous pregnancies. Now I am taking a medicine called Neevo-DHA. It has folate intstead of folic acid because my body cannot metabolize the folic acid (which is man made) into the usable folate. So I just take it directly. Neevo is for pregnant women. There is also Metanx, which is folate without the extra prenatal stuff. It just depends on what your insurance covers. I am also taking Lovenox once per day, due to elevated homocysteine levels cause by the MTHFR. I happen to have a double copy of the C677T gene, which is the worst version to have. Some doctors will say all of that isn't necessary, but others will say it is. In my experience, it is making a difference. This is my fourth time being pregnant and this is the farthest we've gotten, so far, in a pregnancy.
I'm homo MTHFR on the A gene and found out about it through recurrent pregnancy loss testing. I also have high homocyteine levels as well as some acquired thrombophillias and am on Metanx, Baby Aspirin, and Lovenox. I started M & BA when I found out about it, and the Lovenonx at 3dpo.
There's a TON of different information and opinions about MTHFR. Basically, sometimes it's a big deal, sometimes it's not. I'm pretty convinced whether it is or isn't is based on your homocyeteine levels, but this is more of a personal theory. You can also have your folate levels checked to see if you are actually being effected by MTHFR. Also remember that lack of folates doesn't automatically mean baby will have spina bifida or the like. Folic Acid is just linked as a risk reducer.
This is one of my favorite articles.I think i explains things fairly simply. It's miscarriage related, but it has great info beyond that. https://lifebalanceinfertilitycoach.wordpress.com/2008/10/07/the-mthfr-tutorial-genetic-mutation-and-cause-of-miscarriage/
