Anybody been to a BF class?

My husband and I are spending our Friday evening learning how to breastfeed. :) Has anybody been to a class like this? Its not at the hospital its a local baby boutique but done by a certified lactation consultant. I have no idea what to expect but I'm glad we'll be getting some info! Anybody been to one of these?

  • I went to the one my hospital offered. I found it helpful. A lot of the information I already knew, but they did have some helpful pointers. It also introduces you to the lactation consultant - which is very useful after the baby is born. I strongly recommend having one stop by your hospital room if they offer that service. Their help after the baby was fantastic.

  • I would expect info on latching on, positioning baby, supply/demand, and generally what to expect the first few weeks/months. I think taking the class is a fantastic idea, I've nursed 3 babies, once you make it through that first few months IMO it's easy, and there are many solutions to common problems that a lactation consultant (or sometimes another mom), can help you with :)
  • DH and I went to one through our hospital.  I didn't really learn anything I didn't know already, but it was great to have it presented all together and kind of solidified if that makes any sense.  More importantly, it was very good for DH to really learn what's going on, know what to expect, and learn the things that he could do to help.

  • I went to one with dd informative? Yes, however we had a lot of problems still. I think your best bet would be to find ur local le lache league and attend a few meetings that way if you have trouble you know who to turn to, its free.

  • My birthing class covered BFing, and honestly, i think it kinda went in one ear and out the other before the baby was born.  In the hospital they offered another and all of us mothers brought our newborns - that was so much more helpful!  So I'd say a bit of information is very useful, but until you're trying to get that little one to latch on, you might not understand what the heck they're talking about.  It will also be helpful to know where you can turn to if you have problems later.
