August 2011 Moms

I can't believe I'm asking this.

Jack is underweight... Again. Oy.

Liam is in the 90th percentile, weight and height.

How do I put weight on one kid without the other kid getting overweight?

Any healthy weight gaining suggestions?

DH is freaking skinny and so is his family do I sound bitter? my family all struggles with our weight. Why couldn't they just have gotten a balance?

Re: I can't believe I'm asking this.

  • Is Jack still on his curve though, or did he fall off the chart?

    Is his Dr concerned yet?

Maybe you could try to hide fattening stuff in his food so that his big brother wouldn't notice? Like throw some extra cheese in there? Or is he a good eater at all? If so, maybe just make his servings bigger?

I don't know... does that help?

And did I just really answer your question with nothing but questions myself? Why yes, yes I did.

Haha! You did answer my questions with questions!

He fell off of his curve and off of the chart. He's 22 lbs and 31 inches. He said at one point his weight was in the 30th percentile, then the 10th and now it's in a zone where he should put on some weight.

I usually give him extra butter and cheese. He doesn't like smoothies. My first thought was that maybe I could make him a smoothie with coconut oil, peanut butter and fruit. But he won't drink it. I think it's the coldness of it.

    Oh man, that's tough.

    ::puts on thinking cap::

Cream cheese on a bagel - You give it to both boys but lay it thicker on Jack's bagel. You can do the same with peanut butter.

Cream cheese will also blend in nicely with a lot of things - easy to hide

Greek yogurt - You could get the fat kind for Jack but give a lower fat kind to Liam.

    There was a post on 1224, I think, this week and one poster had a lot of good suggestions. Is Liam at school or anything. Just b/c you could give Jack the heavier stuff then.nbsp;I would do things like putting 1/2 amp; 1/2 or cream in his cereal instead of regular milk. Avocados, extra olive oil, coconut oil, flaxseed oil., etc.I can mix all kinds of things into oatmeal, is that an option?nbsp;I will try to find that post. nbsp;ETA: https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/71643734.aspxThere are a few more ideas there. It is hard to find a balance between the extra fat and the stuff you'd prefer he didn't have. I'd rather do some of this stuff than jump straight to pediasure.nbsp;

    Thanks!

He doesn't do milk, although cheese doesn't bother him. We do coconut milk, but he won't touch chocolate coconut milk.

It is a good idea to give him the heavier food while Liam's at preschool. But it is only 2 days a week for a couple hours.

He LOVES cream cheese and avocado! He can eat half of an avocado by himself. Liam doesn't care for it. We've been giving him avocado as a snack for a while.

Heh.  Now I'm wondering about Joey.  He was 22lbs at 15 months and since then he's gotten thinner.  His pants are falling off.  He was 34th percent at 15 months...

I like MHa's cream cheese ideas.  And portion sizes.  Although it's hard when the younger is the one who needs more food.  The older would be more likely to notice differences.

Avocado?  Aren't they high fat and calorie but still healthy?  Will he eat guacamole?  Joey loves it hard.  I'll keep thinking. I'm interested to see what other people come up with.

He was 22 lbs at 15 months too. Skinny minis!

  • OK.  What DOES he eat?  I can help you beef those meals up for him.

He loves all fruit, avocado, peas, broccoli, carrots and homemade Greek yogurt ranch, bacon, cheese, cream cheese, he's a great eater, I don't understand why he has trouble gaining weight.. No milk, ice cream or smoothies

ETA: he also doesn't like yogurt or oatmeal. But I think that's bc he likes to feed himself and that's hard to do with yogurt and oatmeal.

If you want to see if he'll eat yogurt, there are a couple of ways that make it easy for LO to self-feed.

I get the Stoneyfield (?) organic brand of kids' yogurt that comes in tubes. I freeze it, then cut it up into chunks. He loooves it...like, that's all he'll eat right now. If you buy bigger packages of yogurt, maybe you could freeze individual servings, then cube it?

Also with the yogurt tubes, my friend taught me the trick of just cutting off the corner and sticking a straw in it, then letting LO suck it out.

I'd also like to say that I'm starving after reading this thread.

Good idea on the yogurt tubes!! I would have never thought of sticking a straw in one. Actually, today I took the boys to panera and he did really well with a yogurt tube. I just made the hole super small. I added extra butter to his Lima beans last night and broccoli tonight. I think he will be ok. Butter and coconut oil are going to be on everything he eats for a while.

  • Seriously, Hank grew like 1.5 lbs between 18 months and 28 months.  Now, he's shot up and out like crazy.  And, it was actually our pedi that reassured ME!  I thought he'd be  a small fry for life, and she told me that he'd likely grow like a weed (have a growth spurt) at some point before 5 and surprise us all.

We didn't change anything about his diet, he just started eating more to accommodate the growth spurt when it happened.

I think you've got it nailed with the butter and coconut oil.  We've been doing a ton of sunflower seed butter on all of our fruit.  They love it.  Honestly, I just give them a spoonful all the time too.

Good to know!! Do your kids have a peanut allergy? Or do you just prefer them to eat sunflower butter?

I asked my MIL to not allow him to have crackers unless they had cheese or PB on them, but she didn't listen.

She's going to be shocked when I hand her a list of foods they can have bc I'm seriously restricting their diets due to Liam's behavior issues.

No processed foods at all, which is all that my inlaws eat.
