We do mostly blw. He's fine with purees but he loves shoving food in his own mouth so we've been doing more and more table food for meals. It was going well until this weekend....He now has a fun new game he plays. It's called: "pick up the food piece by piece and throw it on the floor." First I thought he was just trying to feed the dog. (Which isn't ok, but could be fixed by training the dog to stay away). But he drops his food on the ground even when the dog isn't there. Like 75% of the food goes on the floor. The mess isn't a problem (thanks to the dog!) But his food is being wasted and he's not getting as much to eat. I like to let him "play" with his food, but I'd like to stop him from throwing it on the floor. Is this a phase? Anyone have suggestions? Do I use a stern voice to tell him to stop it? I just hate to be a disciplinarian when it comes to meal time because it should be fun and experimental, but not in this way I guess. Thoughts?
Re: blw - how to keep food on the tray!
Try only putting two or three piece of food on the tray. If there's too much it can overwhelm them and they drop it.
Also, don't make a big deal when LO drops food or they may think it's a game.
One option is to look at LO and firmly say "No" or then take the food away and say "I guess you are done".
My LO is into throwing his bottle. So what I have done is two fold (he holds his own bottle). I sit near him and when he starts to throw it, I block it and say no firmly but not loud or anything. If I miss a block and he throws it, he starts crying because he wasn't actually done, then I pick him up and we do redirection until he stops crying, then I give him back his bottle. That way he's not rewarded for the crying.
When my LO is no longer interested in his food so far he turns his head away and starts to cry. I have begun to make eye contact and say "All done?" and make the sign language for it. I repeat about 3 x and then I let him down from his high chair. We just started signing a week ago but I'm hopeful he will pick it up soon enough and then he will sign all done instead of getting so angry.
