Too much weight gain by 17 weeks?...

I have gained 13 lbs and I am 17 weeks pregnant. My dr said its a little more than wanted me to gain. I am a vegetarian and a very healthy eater. I've been allowing myself some ice cream, sweets etc but nothing crazy. I also have been active with yoga and walking. They say some women just gain more in the beginning and that will level out. Anyone else having the same issue ?  I was bummed out all day over it.

Re: Too much weight gain by 17 weeks?...

  • I had nausea well into my 2nd trimester and the only thing that helped was to eat carb-y things every 2-3 hours.  Although, I kept up my pre pregnancy workout routine I was always a pound or two over the recommended range. Now that the nausea has subsided some, I'm well within the recommended weight gain suggested for pregnant women.  I think it will even out if you're somewhat mindful of what you're eating and exercising.

  • I gained 13 lbs w/ all three pg in the first tri.  I stopped working out until the end of first tri w/ all of them which was obviously the cause but paranoia after a late 1st tri loss, a second loss - DS1's twin, many IF treatments caused me to walk only.  I ended up w/ GD for DS1 and DS2 so they were super strict on my weight gain.  I gained almost 40 lbs. w/ DS1 (and he was a 33 weeker) I got yelled at every week, and just about 30 w/ DS2.  FWIW, I have never been more hungry in my life than I was when I became pg.  As long as you are staying active and don't go super crazy w/ the junk food then I wouldn't worry.

  • If you started out on the lower end of normal, you are likely to gain more at first.  During my first pregnancy I had gained 14lbs at 20 weeks, but only gained 10 more by 37 weeks (when I delivered).  I am following the same weight gain now in my second pregnancy.  I am up 14lbs, but I really can't imagine only gaining 10 more this time for some reason.

  • Some women just tend to gain more. I gained a lot with my first two - 55-60 lbs total. I was determined not to do that again. This time around I'm working out 3-4 days/week and eating much healthier.

I was up 6 lbs at 17-18 weeks. Then DH and I went on a cruise and the holidays happened... Now at 31 weeks, I'm up 31 lbs. I'm sure I'll gain 40 lbs by the end of this pregnancy. It's not the 30-35 lbs that was my goal, but there's really nothing I can do about it. I'm still exercising and still trying to eat healthier. I'm just hungry all.the.time.

  • same here... I gained alot- about 10 pounds first trimester, but in the end only gained 28 pounds (started at 130 pounds, 5'3").  This pregnancy was similar, I gained alot in the beginning (started at 125) but will probably only gain 25.  Just stick to healthy eating, small meals and lots of snacks.  I got in trouble with eating alot before bedtime.  I have backed that off when I know I have had enough food/calories for the day even if I feel like snacking (sometimes the cravings get the best of me).

Don't worry.  Stay active.  Swimming is great exercise during pregnancy.

  • I feel like I've gained too much. I'm also 17 weeks and I've gained 15 pounds. I also lift weights. However, allot of people are saying I'm "little," I feel like a cow. People are also surprised when I tell them I'm PG. I'm not worrying about it; but I think I will be one of those that gains most of the weight early. I just don't want to gain more than 30.

How do you manage to gain so little in the last trimesters? Once I hit the 3rd trimester, I'm up 1-2 lbs a week no matter what I do. From 28-30 weeks I worked out 3-4 days/week, chased after a 2.5 yo, made sure to choose healthy snacks, and I still managed to gain 2 lbs.

I suppose it doesn't help that I have 9 lbs babies, and 3rd trimester is the time baby really starts to gain weight.

  • it sucks but there literally is not much you can do. some women are more prone to gaining more weight.  I was told the same thing as you, that some women gain more in the beginning.  that gave me hope, but i just kept on gaining a total of 76lbs. ICK!  Not saying this will happen, but it does and half of what i gained was water weight. I lost half of it within a month pp and have lost it all.  You will lose it, no matter how much you gain

I agree with the last post... I think it is just how we are all different.  I was swimming about 45 min pretty hard throughout the second trimester and gained less and then the last 3 weeks was nauseated again and ate less (still kept the goal calories)... I was still enjoying the good stuff... reese's cup, ice cream... I wasn't all that healthy:)

That may be a few pounds more than the ideal but it's nothing to worry about. I am 20 weeks and gained 15 pounds so far which is also a few over. But if I am hungry, I am going to eat! Remember, we've also been pregnant through the holidays so that might have something to do with it. I say eat when you're hungry but just try to focus on lower calorie nutrient dense foods like salads and soups and fruit.. That's what I am doing. If I am craving something though I am probably going to have that too. Don't worry about it!

  • Everyones body is so different. Even from pregnancy to pregnancy women's weight gain varies. There is only so much control you have over your body. I didn't start gaining weight until about 23 weeks and even now at 27 weeks  im under 10 pounds. I lost 10 pounds during first tri due to sickness and i was skinny to begin with so 10 pounds was way too much for me to lose. I am terrified of gaining weight during 3rd tri or retaining water but realistically there isnt much you can do. Try to eat healthy and workout and dont stress
