So I was chatting with lovely cycle buddy KatyJ today about P4s and how they're a mind fluck because you're damned if you're low (worried), damned if you're high (optimistic). So I was hoping for a nice average kind of number today. Something between 15 and 25. Because on non medicated cycles back in 2010 when I first started seeing my RE my P4 was 8 but on treatment cycles it's been as low as 13 but as high as 25 so I thought...that's a good goal to shoot for.
It came back today at 7dpIUI at 4.3. WTF? Never in my wildest dreams did I expect it to be that low! Now the mind fluck of crashing hopes comes down on me. This was on oral supps of 200mg of progesterone.
So they said "what script would you like called in? Endometrin or crinonin gel to add to your oral pills? One is a goopey discharge, one is watery. Pick based on which side effect you think is less annoying." I said "I'll pick based on which is CHEAPEST!" (Since they know I am OOP.) The nurse said, let me go check our samples....and boom free 10 days worth of endometrin. Super. Now I get to shove stuff up my cootch.
So, since 200 oral gives me slight headaches and makes me a bit moody...can I just expect more of the same? Or does anyone have any other side effects I should be on the look out from the new stuff? And any hope you can throw at me telling me P4 is a useless test since high doesn't equal pregnant that low doesn't also mean failure would be good.
Re: Stupid LPD and crap P4 test
Hey Kati!
Sorry your P4 was so low. I hope doubling up the P4 gives you good results. The progesterone side effects I have on PIO are as follows (I've never done oral or vag P4, so I'm not sure how different the side effects are): exhaustion, sore boobs, and slight cramping
My RE said he has seen women sustaining pregnancies with P4 levels as low as 3.5 before, so I've heard of it happening. Of course not trying to blow rainbows up your butt, but just passing along some hope to you!!
GL! Here's to hoping the next 7 days fly by for you!
Sorry you got a low result! Honestly, my RE has not done any of this testing at 7 dpIUI so I don't have any advice on that....I'm going to demand it this go around, so I see what I have to look forward to! What's one more mind fluck each month?!
I do however do the progesterone suppositories every month which I hate with all my being. I have similar symptoms to what you both have mentioned, but now you will just get to deal with the constant discharge and overall uncomfortable sensation that goes along with it. The sore boobs is a big one for me which is super annoying because it gives me false hope that I'm pregnant each time...I mean, really sore!
Awesome that you got a free sample though! Good luck!

Sorry about the crappy P4! Mine are always low. Wish I had some advice on the suppositories, but I use prometrium as a suppository and have little or no side effects from it.
When I need to find some hope in a bad P4 result I always google "Progesterone of (insert yours) and pregnancy". I usually get quite a few results of pregnancy still happening. Maybe that's not the best thing to do, but I do it lol. ((((hugs)))))
After almost 2 years of TTC and fertility treatments we got a surprise BFP in May 2013
ugh, so sorry your level was low! I don't understand the point of the stupid test either since like you said "P4 is a useless test since high doesn't equal pregnant that low doesn't also mean failure". Especially since you're regularly monitored t/o your cycle you know you had follies, I'm sure you triggered which ensures you ovulate, & you did the IUI so they know something was there!! I've been told they want the p4 because it lets them know how well or how strong ovulation was? Not sure if this is right though...
I'm also on 200mg of prometrium that I get to shove up my vag & I don't really notice much for s/e besides discharge. This cycle I finally only have to use them 1x/night whereas the last 2 cycles I've had to insert 2x/day which the morning one was always the worst!
Fingers crossed this cycle works for you and all of this means nothing!!!!!!

Not to blow butterflies up your bum, but don't lose hope! I had a crappy lining this cycle, was put on Estrace and then had a P4 of 7 at my 7dpiui bloodwork so then I was put on Prometrium. So for almost 2 weeks now I've been shoving pills up my vag but... I think it was what I needed! Hence, the ticker.
Hang in there lady!
I'm so sorry your P4 is so low... Ts and Ps coming your way. Hoping it's really higher and the oral dose just isn't showing up well in your b/w

TICKER WARNING
Hugs Kati! I have seen lots of women in your shoes go both ways. And you are right it does not mean you are out! But I am sure this is really frustrating As for the supps, I have taken crinone and honestly had no problems with it. I used it at night before bed so I was laying down for most of it and really didnt have much discharge. It did get a bit, um, clumpy and I had some spotting and different types of discharge when things, uh, backed up in there. Doesn't that sound like fun! I dont know anything about the other though, but YEY for free samples! Fingers and toes are crossed for you lady!
