Question for those with heartbeat

So I had a mostly good appointment today.  My hcg is 25,155 and doubling well, my progesterone went down to 40 from 43 last week but from what I understand progesterone fluctuates and 40 is still good.  I had my ultrasound and am measuring 6 weeks 1 day with a sack and small fetal pole.  This is actually further than I expected.

So the thing is there was no heartbeat - the tech didn't mention it, I asked when she was finished if we should have seen one.  She said oh no it's too early for that.  She booked me for next week (I am with an RE so have weekly appointments) and said we'll see a heartbeat then.

So of course I'm googling which is never good.  I just feel like everyone I've seen on the Bump have had a heartbeat by now.  Those of you with a heartbeat was it just up there plain to see, or did they have to look for it?  I've seen a few people mention it took a while to find and this ultrasound was probably only 3 minutes or so while she took measurements.

Just looking to see if it was obvious or if your tech actually "tried" to find it.

  • I think it depends on the angle and such. With my last pregnancy they found it immediately. Today it took a few seconds of moving the wand around to find it. It was there but a lot harder to see. Fortunately, beating away right on track. Baby's heart starts beating around 6 weeks give or take a little, so you may just have been a bit to early.

I agree.  My first is next week at 6 weeks 2 days and while I know that it could still be early and that's okay, I'm sure I'm going to be really nervous when its not there.

  • my first ultrasounds have always been at 6 weeks + a couple days, and they've always been able to see a heartbeat easily.

I'm going tomorrow morning at 6 weeks, 1 day, so we'll see what happens.

  • The tech was able to see it pretty easly, but I was 7w6d. We were able to see the flicker, although it was a little harder for us since we saw it on a monitor across the room.

  • My first US was at 6 weeks exactly and we couldn't see the heartbeat-maybe it has to do with the quality of the device? I have since seen the heartbeat, 2 weeks after the first US

  • I was 6 weeks 2 days when I went, and my dr had to really look for the flicker. She said at that point it could have just started beating, and that the u/s tech, or in my case, dr, had to be really patient when looking for it. I wouldn't worry about it, I know easier said than done. But when you go next week, you should be able to see it.

  • It is extremely difficult to find so early. I had my first u/s at 6w5d because of spotting and my u/s tech was specifically looking for the hb. It probably took her a good 3 to 5 minutes to find it. I didn't hear anything but saw a flicker on the screen. I wouldn't worry.

  • I had weekly ultra sounds and did not see a yolk sac until 7 week and a heart beat until 8 weeks.
  • It depends on the angle and how far along you are I think.  Oddly enough, it was much easier to see the HB at 6 weeks with DS when it had clearly just started beating (only at 79) than with this one at 6w3days.

  • I just had my first ultrasound the other day at 6 weeks exactly and my dr told me i was just a day or 2 away from being able to see the hb. I go back next friday and should be able to see one by then. Time is going to slowly! I just want the day to hurry and be here!

  • I am going tomorrow 6wk4d and I am really hoping to see the little one beating away. I'll admit, I'm both excited and nervous. I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight!
  • I was 5w6d, but it wasnt easy for them to see as I couldnt hold still enough, nor could she hold her hand still enough to see it well. She could see that there was cardiac activity, but we werent able to hear it or count it.

  • Thank you so much ladies for your advice and experiences.  Here's hoping I see it no problem next week and that it's just a little early or the tech didn't really look hard enough.  To everyone going in the next couple of days, good luck!

  • I went in at 6w4d (6w3d by O date] and we saw a flicker and the HB was 124.

ETA: The u/s place wouldn't even see me until I was at least 6w2d. My OB didn't even want me going until 7w  so that I didn't get discouraged if I didn't see anything.

  • This early a day or two makes a huge difference. You could have had the scan tomorrow and seen a heartbeat. 6 weeks is very early to see it. Good luck next week!

  • I saw the Hb at 5w 6 days. However, I was at a very high tech imaging center. Last pregnancy they did the ultrasound at the doctor's office on a portable machine and he could just barely detect heartbeats at 7 and a half weeks if I remember correctly.

  • I had my first US at 6 weeks 5 days. She had to do a vaginal ultrasound - only way to see anything that early. But as soon as we got set up you could see the flicker if you looked closely. I'm sure it'll pop up next time!
