Growth U/S???

I've seen a bunch of other posts on here about growth U/S. I'm 32 weeks and have only had the one u/s at 20 weeks where we found out the sex. I asked the OB last visit when my next one was and she said 38 weeks!? I'm wondering why some moms have had so many u/s's already and mine is so far out. I have another visit today so I will bring it up again. Just wondering if anyone knows why this is?

I also know many moms found out the sex earlier than 20 weeks so maybe it's just my dr? It's just frustrating because I really want to know her size.

Re: Growth U/S???

  • I get them monthly because I'm 40. Some people get them if they have gestational diabetes.
  • First of all, ultrasounds can be off by more than a pound either way, so they're not terribly reliable in most cases.

Second, consider yourself lucky that you've only had one ultrasound - it means you are having a healthy pregnancy; if people are getting more of them, it's usually because there are concerns for the baby. I've had 19 ultrasounds so far, and it's not been fun.

  • If you are not high risk you will not have as many ultrasounds.  Consider yourself lucky.  Not only is it scary to be high risk but it's also costly.

  • I am a healthy no GD, under 35, etc FTM and I had my first growth u/s at 20 weeks. I also found out the baby's gender at this visit. I did not have another growth u/s until 30 weeks. I will not have another one. I think doctors are just different but it all equals out in the end especially if you do not have any issues that would require more u/s.

  • I get u/s every 6 weeks or so because I am AMA (41 years old) and see an Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist. Also, I had some low numbers on the quad screen tests so they check for abnormalities. Thankfully, none have been found!

    AL always welcome!

  • I didn't realize that people were getting more ultrasounds because of high risk. I thought they were just having a growth u/s earlier. Thanks for letting me know! Just trying to be patient. Can't wait to see her again.
  • Generally speaking, the ultrasound at 20 weeks is pretty much the only "standard". Growth ultrasounds are not part of "standard care" and many OBs do not do any ultrasounds after the 20 week scan.

That being said, the only reason I received a growth ultrasound at 29 weeks was because my fundal height went from measuring spot on to measuring 4-5 weeks ahead in a month. If not for that, I would not have received another ultrasound during my pregnancy.

This. My dr only does additional u/s's if you aren't measuring correctly.

I've only had two u/s's (8 weeks and 18 weeks) and hopefully won't have any more.  Since my dr started measuring me I've been measuring right on schedule.

Ditto everyone else.. while it can be frustrating at times to see so many people getting so many ultrasounds and getting to see their baby so often, I keep having to remind myself that the reason they're getting them is because something is or could potentially be wrong with their baby and my baby is healthy.

  • If LO didn't have any issues, I'd be done with them at 20 weeks.  However, our LO has one enlarged kidney they are keeping and eye on plus I am borderline for Gestational Diabetes so they're monitoring things from that end too.  Trust me, I'd  have been much happier if all was well and I didn't have any more!!

growth ultrasounds are notoriously off by up to 2 pounds either way.  I know several people who have been induced early because they had a "huge" baby and then they gave birth to a 6 pound peanut.  Most of the time, people don't grow babies bigger than their body can handle unless there is something medically wonky (like GD).  Don't stress over it.
  • I get a weekly BPP ultrasound and growth scans every 3 weeks because my baby is IUGR. Consider yourself lucky. Extra scans aren't a good thing.

  • I'm at 34 (almost 35) weeks and i go for our growth us tomorrow at the hospital.   we have had 9  but i'm also high risk because of high bp and my placenta was low at one point.  The book my doctors office gave us in the beginning said we would only have one at the hospital because that is all most insurance allows.  but we have had 4 so far, rest she has done in her office.  sometimes i wonder if its because  i am covered by my insurance at work and my husbands ins. through his work.
  • I had one at 33 weeks as I was consistanly measuring ahead.

  • With my first, I had my last one at 19 weeks.  I was concerned about the baby's size, but my concerns were ignored.  I had an 8.5 lb baby at 36 weeks after my water broke.

This time, I've had a few more.  I'm 37, I've had some pain and some spotting.  I went to a new OB this time since my experience with the last one was awful, and they're monitoring me closely for size (huge babies run in my family) and so that we'll have a little warning if I go early again this time (also runs in the family).

My next scheduled ultrasound is at 36 weeks.  I'm hoping I make it.

  • My doc is the same way. He said if I am measuring appropriate and growing appropriate he doesnt do any other U/S  then 20 wks. I asked about an U/S for position and he felt my belly and said so far head down. Its nice that he isnt concerned about anything but I would have loved to see the LO again before the big day.
  • I found out that my baby has a cord issue (one artery instead of two) which could inhibit the growth later on. We had a level two ultrasound today to make sure that there were no other abnormalities and I may have to do growth ultrasounds as the pregnancy progresses because of a higher risk that the baby will stop growing. If this had not been the case I would have had the traditional anatomy scan and would not have had any others for the remainder of the pregnancy.

  • I had the U/S at 20 weeks, and I don't get another one at all unless something is wrong.

not in my case...I had a dating u/s at 8 weeks, an NT scan at 14 weeks, an anatomy scan at 20 weeks and a growth u/s at 32 weeks. All routine at my practice.

Sorry you've had so many! Especially since it's not for good reasons :(

Thanks. I did write usually, not always - I know there are some practices that do offer them more frequently, but that's the exception, not what's common. especially since some insurance companies can be picky about what's medically necessary.

Exactly this. I've had growth u/s since 24 weeks and as of the past month have had an u/s every week. It gets really old and being high risk isn't fun.

  • I've only had two ultrasounds my entire pregnancy, and won't be getting another one unless there is a problem. One was to "date" my pregnancy, and one was the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. Like others said, consider yourself lucky. If you have a lot of ultrasounds, it's normally when you're high risk.

As for the size, those scans are rarely accurate in terms of pounds. DD was supposed to be a "tiny" 6lb baby, and came out at a healthy 8lb 2oz. TBH, my doctor doesn't even like to give numbers because of how inaccurate it can be!

  • As of my 36 week appointment, I will have had 3 ultrasounds, which is standard for my doctor (one each at 12, 20, and 36). Typically, ultrasounds are not considered necessary unless there are complications (decrease in fetal movements, belly measuring behind, heartbeat being slower or not heard at all, etc), or you're labeled high-risk. Ultrasounds are expensive and some people believe too many can be harmful to the fetus, so they are generally only done when necessary.

  • I am having scans regularly because of issues with the baby's kidneys. I don't even get pictures or see the face at these - they just check all the medical stuff they need to check. It has been nice to hear he is head down these past couple times.

Barring any complications, the standard for my OB is only one ultrasound, at 20 weeks.
