Baby Gassy At Night/Possible Ear Infection??

Hi ladies,

My 8 month old son is up anywhere from 4-10 times a night - (I've posted here before about this) but over the past couple weeks I've noticed he's been trying to pass gas. He writhes, arches and whimpers every time he wakes. It's heart breaking!

I've talked to the doctor (made an appointment today) because he seems to be grabbing both of his ears when he wakes up as well - he does this when he is tired too, but it just seems strange. Can ear infections be slightly difficult to detect? He doesn't scream during the day, and doesn't cry if I get to him right away at night. Sometimes if the gas is bad he will cry a bit.

Also, when he was younger we thought he may be lactose intolerant/have a milk allergy of some sort... per his pediatrician, I started a non-dairy diet to no avail. :(

I feel so bad. I don't know what to do.. it seems like there is something wrong. We've been thinking about sleep training - was going to start this weekend, but I can't if I feel that there's something wrong.

Has anyone had their baby tested for a milk allergy? When I called to ask about it before, they quickly dismissed my question and went onto something else. Makes me mad! I will keep persisting. Especially at this next appointment.

Previous experience at all with ear infections/milk issues? At this age, could it still be a milk issue? He is so happy during the day. Night time is just a wreck!

Also, we have tried gas drops/colic calm and have had no luck.. :( He was also on Zantac before, but I stopped it because nothing changed after about 4 months.

TIA!

Re: Baby Gassy At Night/Possible Ear Infection??

  • My LO had NO symptoms of an ear infection when she had the first one.  The second time she had one she only began waking at night crying but never ran a fever and never tugged at her ears.  The 2nd time was a double ear infection.  So your LO having one w/o symptoms is a definite possibility.

Have you started solids on your LO yet?  If so, maybe gassiness could be from something he's eating?

  • I am going through the EXACT same thing. He is perfect during the day, but for the past two weeks he wakes up SEVERAL times at night. Mind you, he was STTN perfectly before that.

I kinda feel like it could be his ears too and since he is laying on his back it bothers him more to be in that position. Never though it could be gas, but now that I read this it might be gas!

I'm going to see the pedi tomorrow so he can get checked out.

  • I am having this exact problem! My LO has a cows milk protien allergy, was very colicky when she was born due to the allergy. Finally got her on a good schedual, she was sick over xmas but shes better now. Since then shes been up every hour or 45 min during the night passing gas and crying in pain. I took her in to get her ears checked, they are fine. Not sure what it is, I have started some solids but have stopped for the past week bc thought this could be causing the gas, but shes still waking up. I feel soo terrible for her, shes in good spirits in the day but night is terrible. This has been going on for about three weeks now. Any suggestions?
