Classes the second time around

Is anyone going to any birthing, BFing, or child care classes again if you've done them with a previous pregnancy?  I was all about it last time and looking back at everything in the delivery room to BFing, they were totally worthless.  BFing went terribly for me last time b/c I was so uneducated, BUT felt like I knew all I needed to know after the classes, KWIM?

Anyway, my insurance doesn't require me to do it, so we will not be taking any classes this time.  :)  Whew

Re: Classes the second time around

  • We decided to skip the classes as well even though this is my first. I attended a birth class with my best friend about 2-3 years ago when she had her son and I can't say I really learned anything new and once you get in the delivery room I feel like it's a whole new ball park anyway. The classes cost $70 through my hospital and insurance doesn't cover them so we've decided since I've already been through a class before that the money could be put to better use furnishing LO's room.

  • We're taking a childbirth preparation refresher class, I haven't given birth in 15 years and this is DH's first? So we thought it may be a good one to attend? As for the other classes offered, we'll probably pass on. I'm hoping bf will be like riding a bike and it will all come back to me. The other class we're signed up for is the sibling preperation class for our 4yo, she is very much the baby in the family so hopfully this will be a good one for her...

  • I didn't do them the second time around, either.  They were pretty much worthless the first time, considering my DH had no idea when he was supposed to help me with the breathing exercises (he thought that was for pushing - HA!).  With the internet and sites like Baby Center and even birth videos on youtube, you can get what you'd get out a class yourself.  And having been through it and (kind of ) knowing what to expect make a huge difference.

My biggest gripe was that they used to do the relaxation exercises in a totally quiet room.  Neither time I was in labor was my room ever quiet.  It's a hospital, there's always something beeping or someone down the hall making noise.

  • I took a BFing class my second time around because I had concerns about it. With DS1 he was premature and never took to nursing, I Exclusively pumped for him for 8 months. I really wanted to be successful at nursing DS2. It was helpful.

  • No we are skipping the classes this time around since it wasn't that long ago that we did this.  I may meet with a LC before I have the baby though to discuss breastfeeding and my inadequate milk supply from last time around.

  • No classes this time. I thought they were worthless as well the first time around. I actually was asked to leave at one point because I couldn't stop laughing. It was during a birth video and breathing part of the class.
  • I am hoping to do a Hypnobabies home study but no classes this time. IF BFing had gone badly for me, I would definitely take another class or at least meet with an LC before attempting again.

  • We won't. I didn't find out prenatal classes very helpful to me, between the books I had read, and the bump. BUT, it was beneficial to DH. But there is no reason to do it again.

I will read a few books on breastfeeding however. It didn't go well last time, and even though I've talked about it several times with my Dr, and she assures me I did all I could, I want to be more informed this time.
