Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Premature Mommies come in please

What are your babies doing now and what is age/adjusted age?? I'm trying hard not to compare mine to full- term babies because it totally stresses me out. LOL Right now Lincoln is pretty much sitting up unassisted. But any sudden movement or turning too far can make him topple over. He's seven months, two weeks...adjusted age would be six months, one week. He's also just beginning to move his legs during tummy time resulting in moving occasionally but I don't think he realizes it yet lol. It looks like he's swimming because he'll put his head down and kick. He's very curious and has began pushing away from me while being carried. He talks/babbles ALOT and has for a long time. EXCEPT in public, he just gets really pensive and observant in public. Rarely smiles at anyone LOL he also beginning to have separation anxiety.

Just curious to see how everyone's preemies are developing!!

Late twin loss at 19 weeks on September 24, 2010. Lincoln Perry, my rainbow baby, born June 15, 2012. You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb. Psalms 139:13 Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

Re: Premature Mommies come in please

  • DD is 8months 1week, adjusted age 7months. She is sitting much better the past two weeks and able to balance reaching for toys, leaning from side to side. She has always hated tummy time and shows absolutely no interest in crawling. She loves to stand and will gladly do so for long periods of time if she has something to hold on to. She just pulled up for the first time from sitting to standing unassisted this week and has started to take steps and walk if you hold her hands.

She babbles and "talks" ALL the time at home, but is quieter in public (this is pretty normal in my experience for most babies). She still isn't saying any real words, and just really started to respond to/recognize her name. She has mastered the pincher grip in the last two weeks and loves to feed herself cherrios and other small finger foods.

She has bascially always had separation anxiety, so for us that isn't anything new. She is a velco baby who LOVES her Mom and always wants to be held. So, it is a big deal that she is playing more independently on the floor for longer than 5min at a time and doesn't cry hysterically anymore, but can be distracted by a toy or book and calm herself down when we seperate in less than 5 min.

  • I'm responding both as a preemie mom (DD) and as a mom of a full term baby--babies do things in their own sweet time. DS was a FT baby and he wasn't sitting fully unsupported at 6 months. Some babies are on the later end of the milestone charts and that's perfectly fine. That's why there is always a range for milestones.

Preemies sometimes do take longer than full term babies to master stuff. It's normal, it's natural and it's usually nothing to be concerned about. To be honest, it sounds like he's starting to catch up, if he babbles that much at 6 months adjusted.

My DS is an observer in public too. It's just their personalities coming out.

The worst thing any parent, but especially a preemie parent can do is compare their babies to others. If you're really concerned, talk to your doctor at the next appointment, but for the most part, just enjoy your baby and let come what may.

Totally agree. It is hard though not to compare. I think I have avoided a lot of the stress in this area because although I work full time, my Mom watches DD, so we never really see her around other babies. We don't have any side by side comparisions we can make.

  • It's hard for me to not compare my lil ones to each other.  One is almost crawling, sitting strongly on his own, and is now pulling himself up on his knees.  The other one has not even rolled over yet!  He does well on his tummy, but is over it after 10 min.  He's happy as a clam on his back.  I'm not too worried since the pediatrician doesn't seem concerned.  But he's got 2 teeth!  Oh they are almost 8 months, and their adjusted age is 6 mo. 3 wks.

  • DD is the same- screams and babbles at home and is very quiet in public and around other people (until she warms up to them)

    She hates tummy time!

She will roll over immediately. And if she doesn't roll right away, she will cry until I pick her up.

I think every baby (premature or not) grows and does things at their own pace and comfort. I think she is doing just fine and wouldn't want it any other way- she's happy and healthy and growing ! :)
