Awhile ago, someone posted asking about the timing of circumcision. I don't remember all the details, but they were asking if people had planned to do the circa while in the hospital, or about a week later.
I responded that I had wanted to do it a week later, in my OB's office as they provide local anesthetic, a soothing atmosphere, etc. Plus, it's been said that circumcision can interfere with breastfeeding early on. However, that wasn't possible with my insurance company (they required it to be done in hospital for it to be paid). I also said that with DS #1, I didn't notice a difference at all, but with DS #2, he didn't have any interest in nursing the day he was circumcised. I promised to update after DS #3's birth, so here I am.
DS #3 was circumcised 3 days after birth (I had a c/s and he was circ'd the morning we came home). I didn't notice any interruption in his breastfeeding. He latched on like a champ and nursed as normal all day long. He also was remarkably calm when they brought him back to my room following the procedure. He wasn't crying and didn't show signs that he had been crying.
Anyway, I promised to update, so I wanted to get this out there.
Re: Circumcision and Breastfeeding Latch: Update
It was me who posted the original question! Thanks for the update. We have decided to have the circ done in the hospital before we go home, despite my OB's suggestion to do it a week later at a surgical center. I left the choice up to my husband and that's what he wants to do. I feel like it will be the better choice.
One other question for you- I'm concerned that watching him go through the circ will be really difficult for me to watch. Was it for you? Just the thought of seeing my newborn son go through pain like that makes me want to cry.
I like cookies.
thank you for remembering! I didn't want to bother you by asking so soon
That's really good news, especially seeing as how DH pretty strongly feels it should be done in the hospital after birth.
I'm glad Lucas is bfing so well...I hope to God we have the same luck this go-round!
We had to hang out for 2 hours after the circ to make sure there wasn't any bleeding and then we were discharged. They did the circ at 9:30 and we were out of there just after 11:30.
