Diet issues

I'm getting worried, frustrated, etc about DS's diet. He's pretty much down to yogurt, bananas, cheese, applesauce, multigrain cheerios, and graham and ritz crackers, and kraft mac and cheese. He absolutely has refused anything else for the last two days, even stuff he used to like, like peanut butter sandwiches, grilled cheese, food pouches... I can't remember the last time he ate actual meat, maybe some chicken nuggets a couple of weeks ago. I don't eat a lot of meat, so it's a struggle for me to make it. He wants yogurt ALL the time, and I don't know how much is too much.

Help!! Is this a phase? Any suggestions? Any advice? The dip thing doesn't work anymore, unless it's unhealthy stuff like french fries in ketchup.

Re: Diet issues

  • My pedi said to remain consistent in still offering new and old foods, even if they're rejected, and to not stress at all because toddlers are weirdos in the food department. I say, if he wants yogurt, give it to him.

  • Have you tried different meats?

Ground beef, Ground turkey, Chicken, Bologna, Hot dogs ECT.

Also how about spices? L tends to like items with more seasoning. Like teriyaki chicken or spicy jambalaya.

L was on a crappy food eating habit to but they do break from it. Just keep offering all foods :-)

  • He won't even TASTE anything I give him. He says he's hungry, but still refuses anything but yogurt or crackers. I'm a terrible cook anyway, and DH had taken over most of the cooking duties before we moved. Now he'd not here, and it's my first time cooking for just DS and me. I used to survive on random stuff when DH was gone before and skip a lot of meals, but now I have to actually eat for LO2 and make sure DS eats, too. I feel like I go to the store every other day to get something else for him to try.

He WON'T eat chicken. The nuggets were a shock to me. He usually spits out ground beef. I don't think I've ever tried hot dogs or bologna, so maybe I will try that. He has no teeth yet, so meat is hard for him anyway. He also won't eat eggs, probably because I suck at cooking eggs.

Thanks for the advice and encouragement. He used to be such a good eater, so this is rather frustrating.

  • The only reason you should worry is if you stop offering foods.

I second the rotersie chicken. Maybe he doesn't like the texture of chicken? You could dice it super tiny so the texture is different. You can throw all kinds of things into grilled cheese and macncheese. You can add extra fruit to his yogurt. You could make him a smoothie.

Did you try the quesadilla? You can hide all kinds of stuff in quesadillas.

Have you watched cooking videos on YouTube? He would provably drink a smoothie. Do you have a blender or anything to make a smoothie with? You can throw veggies in a smoothie and because of the sweet fruit and yogurt he won't be able to taste them. Raw spinach works well for this.

Don't be hard on yourself about cooking. There are tons of foods you don't have to cook that you could keep offering him. Jack loves avocado, strawberries and blueberries. He went through a picky phase but I took away the crackers and only offered fruit and veggies for snack. He also will eat anything that has butter on it. Does your LO like butter?

It sounds harsh, but he will eventually get hungry.

  • I'm right there with you. My kid won't even look at meat. Forget veggies!! All he wants is yogurt, fruit and goldfish. Breakfast this morning was one bite of muffin and about four Cheerios. He also drank some smoothie. He wouldn't touch the French toast I made.

He's a late teether and getting a bunch of teeth all at once, so I'm hoping this has something to do with it.

  • I agree with everyone else: toddlers can be picky and weird when it comes to food.

I know it doesn't seem like he's eating much, but at least you're able to get him to eat somewhat healthy.

Maybe you could try to hide different foods in his yogurt. I would start with mixing them as a puree so only the taste is different, and if he takes well to those, then try with actual pieces of food. You could do something like pear + turkey, orange + beef...

Otherwise, I agree that you just need to keep offering. This, too, shall pass

When did he cut his first tooth? We're still waiting for one. Maybe that has something to do with the sudden refusal.

Thank you so much, everyone. I hope some of these suggestions work.

Also, I should have real internet again by the weekend, so I can look up some recipes online.

And though I suck at cooking, I am aweome at baking cookies, so everyone have a cookie for helping me!

probably around 11 months. He got four teeth within a couple months, then nothing until recently. I see about four, maybe five, of them coming through now though, including a molar. He used to be a great eater!  I bet your LO has something brewing in there too!

  • We went through this a couple months ago.  It was rough phase, as I'm also not much of a cook, and had to get creative.  I was also very worried and frustrated, but here's what worked for us:

Veggies:  Offer these first, and with at least 2 meals a day. Keep offering, like Mrs. Case mentioned, even if it is just a small handful of peas.  Keep the other foods (that he likes) out of sight until he's had a few minutes with just the veggies. Oh, and don't watch him eat them LOL.  I found that if I busied myself at the counter making a sandwich, DD was more inclined to at least try what I left on her tray when I wasn't watching.

Meats: If you have a Trader Joe's nearby, go buy a bag of the Turkey Meatballs.  It is the only meat that DD has ever eaten consistently, she's funny about meat texture.  They're pre-cooked and frozen, you just pop them in the microwave for one minute.

Drinks:  limit milk immediately before meals, so he doesn't fill up on it ahead of time.

Food presentation:  Change up how you serve some of his old favorites.   When DD stopped eating eggs, I started throwing them (scrambled, with cheese) in a tortilla shell for a quick breakfast quesadilla.  You can also easily sneak some veggies in there, I use frozen green peppers, or frozen chopped spinach.  You said he used to eat pb sandwiches.  Try spreading a slice of whole wheat/grain  bread with pb, then roll/wrap it around a banana and slice it up.  You hit a couple of food groups and get him some protein.

Sorry this got so long, I was trying to come up with as many suggestions as I could think of!  Also agree with Rachey's idea to try smoothies in his sippy, they're easy yummy!
