Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Eczema

Hi all!  Just found out my son has eczema.  It started on his arms and has now spread to his face.  Its not terribly noticeable but it seems to be getting worse.  His face is all pimply.  Ive tried vaseline, aveeno, and triple paste.  None seem to be working.  Any advice would greatly be appreciated.  He was EBF for 4 months and breastfed for 6 months.  He is now on Enfamil formula.  Im wondering if his formula could have anything to do with it.  THANKS! :)

Re: Eczema

  • The only thing that helps to clear up my sons eczema is a prescription steroid cream. With it, his rashes still come and go but I'm thinking the harsh northern weather we live in doesnt help much, hoping spring clears it up!

  • DD has eczema and what helped her was switching to fragrance free laundry detergent/dryer sheets and using Aveeno Eczema lotion. She has a very mild case though, so you might have to get a Rx, but going fragrance free would be a good place to start. Hope this helps.
  • @Gingersnap....What fragrance free laundry detergent do you use?  Im currently using Dreft.  I wonder if that could be the problem.
  • My son has a very mild case and our pedi said to rub aquaphor all over him, even if he only has one or two spots because it can spread so easily. In her words "grease him up like a little pig before bed". So I do every night as part of his routine. For red raised spots, Cortisone cream.  This combo has worked wonders on his.

  • We use Purex free and clear on our clothes as well as LO's.  Because she has super bad eczema, she was even breaking out when someone who doesn't wash their clothes in free and clear holds her.  We also switched to a dye free baby wash.  We use aquaphor, babyganics eczema cream (sold at target) and have a steroid cream for when it's super duper bad.

  • Did he receive vaccines? If so, it is possible that the eczema is a result of a reaction to them. There have been studies done that show a significant increased risk for autoimmune disorders (such as eczema) in vaccinated children. My sister has it pretty bad. Unfortunately, it can be a tricky beast to treat. There is no "cure." You can only manage the symptoms. The good news is that it usually significantly improves as you age!

As for treatment, probiotics are a great place to start! They can help regulate the bacteria in  your LOs digestive tract and have been proven to assist in managing eczema. Other things you might want to try is cold pressed virgin coconut oil, vitamin E oil, and aloe vera gel. Chamomile, licorice, and witch hazel creams can be very helpful.

I'm sorry your LO is having such a hard time!

  • My ds had it so bad we tried everything, you name it. The only thing that worked as last resort was prescription strength hydrocortisone and it was gone within days. We also started to only bathe him twice a week with water only. And his skin is finally like a babys skin should be. GL

  • Have you heard of or tried Halo's ComfortLuxe clothing? https://www.halocomfortluxe.com/
It has a seal of acceptance from the national Eczema Association. And the fabric is amazing and super soft I wish could get jammies in the material. Check it out.

  • My DS has eczema as well. His is getting much worse with the winter weather so we are having to move to a mild prescription cream. I did have luck with a few other remedies before.

The aveeno cream and body wash for eczema work fairly well.

I also used whats called "angel baby bottom balm". Its a natural diaper cream that is just oils and botanicals and can be used anywhere. I would usually see overnight improvement with that. Someone recently told me to try coconut oil and that really helped the dry scales on his scalp clear up.

  • Thanks all for your wonderful advice!!! Hopefully I'll see some improvement soon!!
  • My DD is 2.5 now and has battled it her whole life until about 4 mos ago. She got a really bad out break that turned into staph. It was a nightmare. Our pedi dermatologist said to use All Free & Clear, aquaphor after bath locks in the moisture. We used to go through tubs of aquaphor. What has turned her skin into perfection tho is Cerave cream sold at the drug store. They also have a cleanser. It took 6 wks to get her cleared up but she hasn't had a break out sense. I swear by that stuff and use it 2-3x a day! I used to hate touching her skin and watching her itch now I can't keep my hands off her smooth skin!

If you haven't researched, eczema is a disorder of the skin where it doesn't retain moisture like ours does. They're always dry so the trick is keeping them moisturized. It's also backwards from how we'd imagine. Itchy causes rash not rash causes itch. So don't let them scratch!  Lotions usually contain alcohol (to thin it) which can dry out the skin, that's why creams are better. I havent used aquaphor since we discovered Cerave. It's been magic for us. GL!

  • We also have steroid cream. But I stay away from it unless its really bad. When he's have a bad breakout we rub him down with Eucerin at least three times a day and that helps!! He's a greasy baby!! LOL

  • My son also has really bad eczema and with the dry weather (we live in the mountains) its just getting worse. I have always used coconut oil and only recently started using it on him (because I ran out of Eucerin). Suprise! It works wonders! It takes about a week or so to start noticing things getting better, and I have continued to use cortizone on the bad patches while using the coconut oil. As long as baby isn't allergic (I would test in a small area first) I would try it.

Eczema can be an allergic reaction, most commonly to dairy and wheat. You could try putting him on soy formula for a while but keep in mind soy is also another common allergen. I'm going to test out the allergy theory when he is older and no long BF as I am allergic to soy so Dr. says don't try it.
