December 2012 Moms

Is it normal?

If visitors come to your house and wants to hold your LO and tell them to wash their hands before touching him/her is that okay? Do they get offended? What are your thoughts about this? I just don't want my little guy to get sick.

  • When we first told my inlaws I think they were a little embarrassed. If you think this is awkward I had to tell my husband to tell his mom to stop blowing in her face. Definitely tell them.

  • This is the perfect opportunity to blame the pedi, ie "our pediatrician recommended that we ask everyone to wash their hands before touching baby." Voila!

Pp, that face blowing thing is bizarre!

  • No one we have told has been offended. Almost everyone washed their hands without us saying anything, it is flu season so they should be washing them anyways. If you think they will get upset, do what a pp said and blame the doctor.

  • If they get offended, they always have the option of not washing their hands, and looking at LO from a distance rather than get to hold him. ;) The flu and the stomach flu are too rampant right now, you want to hold DS, you wash your hands, not negotiable.

  • So far the only person I have to remind is DH. He's a pilot and always goes to hold her first thing when he's just been exposed to every germ in the province :S All our friends and family make a point of saying they're going to wash their hands because they just came from work, shopping, etc. without me asking.

  • I bought hand sanitizer, and ask people to use it first. It's flu season, everyone seems to understand, plus it's quick and easy

My DH is a pilot too. He changes out of his uniform before he holds LO. I cringe to think of the stuff he comes in contact with.

  • My mom bought me surgical masks to give to anyone who is not feeling well when they come to see the babies lol. Haven't had to bust them out yet, but asking ppl to wash hands seems pretty tame in comparison. And fwiw most of my visitors wash their hands anyway....no one wants to get a new baby sick.

  • Your home, your kid, your rules!!!

I greeted visitors with hand sanitizer, surgical masks, and let all visitors know NO KIDS UNDER 12 before coming to visit for the 1st 2 months we were home.  Granted, we were also preemies and most was per pedi's orders, but I think I would have done the same thing even if they would've been full term. This year has been awful for the cold/flu.  I didn't (and still don't) want to risk it.
